Sustainable Society

This minor is offering four modules covering important issues on sustainability: Personal Leadership, Circular Economy, Corporate Social Responsibility and Energy Transition. So you will learn what sustainability means and how to apply several tools and theories in real-life cases.

This minor helps you to enlarge your knowledge of sustainability issues in society such as climate change, energy transition, (gender) inequality and the role of governments and companies. You are invited to design solutions to help solve these issues. For example companies could be advised to become more circular. Interventions towards communities in creating more awareness regarding sustainability issues could be tested. An important aspect of this minor is to develop skills for enhancing change and specific competences like a system orientation: how do our actions affect people living elsewhere or future generations? Next to classes you will work on real life cases and you will test your prototypes in real life.

Minor content

You will take three courses and work on a project. The course are: personal development, energy transition and sustainable change. In personal development you will develop your sustainable competences, in energy transition you will give advice to a neighbourhood to become energy neutral. In sustainable change you will learn about major developments in sustainability in society and in organizations and the variety in intervention methods to increase awareness and willingness to participate in solutions. In the project you will work on a real life case in which you will choose a sustainable development goal (SDG) to make your own contribution to make the world a better place.

Structure of the minor

The learning objectives are enlarging your knowledge of sustainability issues in society, based on the SDG’s. You will study some books about these themes, including change- and transition management and we will invite some guest lecturers.

The second learning objectives are about developing your sustainability competences such as system and future orientation, personal involvement and action skills.

You will work on three assignments (in a group) and make a test (individually). The three courses together are rewarded with 15 EC and the project (group work) is also 15 EC. In the course of the project you will visit your contractor and you will participate in one or more excursions, related to the topics of this minor.

You will work in a project team of 3-4 students on your project and deliver a report (15 EC).

You will write an individual reflection report on what growth you have reached in the RESFIA+D competencies. In a final assessment, you will be interviewed about this and graded using the RESFIA+D competencies (3EC).

Ingangseisen

This minor is open for every student, no matter what you field of study is. The most important requirement is your motivation to make the world a better place. That is why we look at problems in society and downsize them to feasible and realistic projects where you can contribute to real people. Your specific background will be useful since we aim at a variety in the group in terms of study and cultural background. You will find the mixed international group very inspirational. Since we believe that problems such as climate change won’t go away overnight. Your future work will be affected by sustainability issues and therefore it is wise to know more about its consequences and possible solutions.

Toetsing

The courses energy transition (3EC) and sustainable change (6EC) are tested with a group assignment.

The course personal development (6EC) is tested with a portfolio and an assessment.

The project (15EC) is tested with a portfolio and presentation for the contractor and the teachers involved.

During the minor you will be given the opportunity to show your experience and skills and also your ambitions in the form of inspirational sessions or mini lectures (TED talks). These activities can be included in your portfolio of personal development.
