Sustainable Business

The Sustainable Business Minor focuses on the relationship between business, environmental and social policies that range from local to global contexts.  Students learn how to create value for business by assessing companies’ current business models based on circular economy and cradle 2 cradle principles, and identifying opportunities for sustainable development.  

 

In the minor, students become acquainted with models for sustainable business practices and how these can help to address challenges in sustainable business.  
 
The minor consists of four parts: 
1. Introduction to Sustainable Business (4 ECTS) 
2. Sustainable Business Challenges (4 ECTS) 
3. CSR and Global Supply Chain (4 ECTS) 
4. Guest Lectures (3 ECTS)

Introduction to Sustainability 

 

  1. Students can discuss how sustainability challenges impact environment.
  1. Students can understand business performances in the linear economy and how this differs with a circular approach.
  1. Students can critically analyze theories and practical data (e.g. cases) in the field of sustainable business.
  2. Students can evaluate sustainability challenges from local to global contexts regarding social-, economic- and environmental well-being. 
  3. Students can explore agile sustainable business strategies in a fast-changing environment (a perfect storm of disruption) and formulate sustainable business  

 

Sustainable Business Challenges 

  1. Students can discuss how sustainability challenges impact environment and society and link to international business.
  2. Students can understand sustainable business models and practices and their impact on business, society and environment.
  3. Students can critique how business institutions and stakeholders affect the balance between economy, society and environment.
  4. Students can evaluate sustainability challenges from local to global contexts regarding social, economic and environmental well-being.
  5. 5. Students can formulate sustainable strategies and solutions for business to balance environmental, social and economic development.

 
 

CSR and Global Supply Chain 

 

  1. Students can assess the role of corporate social responsibility in global supply chain.
  2. Students can identify the value of cross-sector partnerships between NGOs and businesses.
  3. Students can develop the ability to set up and manage CSR strategies for a sustainable supply chain.
  4. Students can understand key international frameworks for responsible environmental and social performance management.  

Guest Lectures 

  1. Students can extract core information from lectures and case studies on sustainability practices, challenges, and opportunities in everyday lived business examples.
  1. Students can analyze sustainability practices, challenges and opportunities presented by guest lectures.
  1. Students can form their own position on real-world business practices.
  1. Students develop their ethical and social compass.

Toetsing

A minimum of a 5.5 is required for each of the components:
