New Earth

A sustainable lifestyle seems to be in reach for the world’s elite only. Only the rich can afford to spend on solar panels, biological food and eco-fashion while the poor are forced to migrate due to the destruction of their environment.  

New Earth takes a critical approach to sustainable paradigms like the circular economy. In search for a ‘new earth’ we research fair development in the wake of capitalism, climate change and fossil resource depletion. This requires redefining power structures on local ànd international level. We challenge you to pick apart these systemic issues, take out perverse incentives and give form to radical and hopeful future scenarios that can make people face this century’s most vital societal transition with a smile on their face.

You will research both social design as a political act as well as new ways of producing/consuming in relation to environmental, social and economic contexts. You will be asked to translate this research into a critical and challenging manifest as well as to make a concrete piece of work that provokes change! (an app, a cultural program, a hack, a product design, a material, a fashion line, an installation, a video, an intervention, a book etc). At the end you will present and debate both your research and your piece of work in a public event.

For this minor you are challenged to find your own case study and stakeholders, which requires to have a high level of self initiation. As inspiration or starting point you can make use of the ‘briefing generator’ from https://challenge.whatdesigncando.com/challenge/briefing-generator/

Leerdoelen

The minor aims to develop students knowledge, skills and attitude that are necessary to deal with equitable transition in relation to social art and design. Competencies & learning goals:

 

1. Creative ability

  • Students are able to reframe complex social issues, with the use of their of powers of imagination, creation and expression.
  • The student is able to make, test, improve and realize projects in interaction with a relevant context (real people, audiences, stakeholders) in such a way that the public gains a new perspective of its own world.

2. Ability to reflect critically

  • Students can reflect upon their work in relation to an equitable transition, fancy new economic and systemic changes in society.

  3. Ability to grow and change

  • The student analyses, synthesizes, develops, applies and reflects upon both social art/design and transition-specific skills, knowledge and attitudes, in relation to developments in society
  • The student learns to have an open attitude in order to let new knowledge influence them and help their work get further. 

4. Organisational ability

  • The student is able to organize his or her own interdisciplinary project and is able to interact professionally with self organized external partner(s), stakeholder(s) and audience(s).  

5. Context awareness

  • Students are able to call attention to upcoming social issues, and to face today’s and tomorrow’s challenges, and relate to national and international artists and designers.

6. Communicative ability

  • Students can

-          interact with relevant audiences

-          document outcomes of embedded research

-          visualize existing and reframed systems

-          present their projects in a professional way, visually, written and verbally 

7. Collaborative ability

  • Students are able to collaborate with other disciplines and cultures outside WdKA.
  • Students are able to define, attract, collaborate with and connect multiple stakeholders (of expertise, power and use).

Ingangseisen

Studeer je buiten de Hogeschool Rotterdam dan kan je je inschrijven via kiesopmaat.nl. Alle informatie over de registratie zijn te vinden op de website van kies op maat. Na sluiting van de inschrijfperiode op kiesopmaat.nl ontvang je een uitnodiging voor een toelatingsgesprek. Verdere informatie over dit gesprek je bij de uitnodiging. Op basis van dit toelatingsgesprek wordt besloten of je kunt deelnemen.

Toetsing

The assessment consists of three parts: Theory, Practice and Presentation. All parts are equally important but students will not pass if one part is graded with a 5 or lower.

THEORY

  • Weekly tracked and publicly accessible blog on the theoretical and embedded research and practical work within the minor
  • Final article (±1500 words) explaining both research, project, conclusion and reflection in relation to an international social design & transition discours.

PRACTICE

  • Manifest explaining  hypothesis or ‘theory of change’ (based on theoretical and embedded research). Choose a form that fits the subject (comic, one minute video, text, image essay etc.)
  • Tested project that involves relevant stakeholders, including those who are most affected by the transition, to test this theory.

PRESENTATION

  • a collectively organised event, at an appropriate location with relevant stakeholders, showing all minors results
  • visual and oral presentation of project & research during collectively organised public event.
