The Art of Making

The Art of Making minor is perfect for those passionate about design and product creation. Immerse yourself in a comprehensive program that takes you from initial sketches to producing market-ready designs. Our focus is not just on the aesthetics of design, but also on the hands-on creation of prototypes and small series of actual products.

In this dynamic and engaging program, you will work in a small team to bring your product vision to life. You will explore efficient and cost-effective production techniques and make informed material choices through research and new knowledge. The goal is to empower you with the skills and confidence to turn your ideas into tangible products.

During this minor you’re going to design and produce small consumer products using self-made/designed machines and tools while exploring the subjects of design, material, and production.

  • Design: Conduct research to understand the needs and wants of your target audience. Generate ideas and prototypes that are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and sustainable. 
  • Material: Choose materials by considering the properties and characteristics of different materials and how they will impact the final product. 
  • Production: Build/Design self-made machines and tools to produce your product. Consider the production process, efficiency, and sustainability. 
  • Explore: Dive deep into the subjects of design, material, and production. Read books, articles, and case studies to learn from the experts. Experiment with new techniques and approaches.

These assignments are a unique opportunity to challenge yourself and apply your knowledge in a hands-on project. You will gain practical skills and experience in designing, prototyping, and producing consumer products. You will also deepen your understanding of design, material, and production and their impact on the environment and society.

Leerdoelen

  • Be proficient in giving and receiving feedback from peers and future employers.

  • Have the ability to either manufacture or design tools.

Ingangseisen

Target audience:

  • Undergraduate students in their third or fourth year, with an interest in product design and fabrication.

Advantages:

  • Basic knowledge of materials and production processes at the undergraduate level.
  • Basic proficiency in 3-D CAD design software like Solid Works.
  • Basic hand sketching abilities.

Language requirements:

  • Strong written and verbal English language skills are essential. However, if necessary, feedback can also be given in Dutch.

Rooster

Throughout the duration of the minor, a continuous work schedule will be maintained on various assignments. To maximize growth and development, multiple sessions and structured activities will be conducted regularly throughout the week.

Contact time: ​40 hours weekly

Toetsing

The minor focuses on developing various skills through a series of assignments with different themes. Regular peer feedback sessions and assessments are conducted to track learning, growth and improvement. The assignments are culminated in an exposition and portfolio, which will determine the final grade for the minor.

30 ECTS are rewarded when passing with a grade of 5,5 or higher.

All students have the right to one resit at the end of the minor.
