Sustainability, Social Responsibility & Professional Identity (1st semester 20/21)

This minor is based on the combination of two main topics: ethics and sustainability. Insights from these two fields are used to develop a clear and deep understanding of what a professional in fields relevant to BUas could and should pursue from a social responsibility perspective. Students are encouraged and supported in developing their own identity as a professional.


The main learning outcome for students is to develop their own professional identity and for this identity to be supported by broad and in-depth knowledge, skills and attitudes related to social responsibility as a professional.

Structure of the minor

The total study load of the minor is 30 credits (840 hours). Two summative assignments of 15EC and two formative assignments. 

Teaching method(s)

Blended learning supported by community learning: this means that most sessions (with the possible exception of introductory lectures and guest lectures) will have about 25-40 students per session. These sessions can be working lectures, seminars, coaching sessions, discussion groups, etc. These sessions are supported by materials available online. During the period that students are working on their assignment, they will be supported by additional on-demand (face-to-face or online) coaching sessions.

International context

Throughout this minor, differences in cultural valuations of ethical dilemmas and sustainability initiatives will be taken into account and highlighted. 


Good level of English


In principle, all topics will be tested by means of two written assignments. The final assignment will be assessed based on a combination of a product (report, film/video, set-up of a training session, etc.) and a verbal discussion on this product.
