Energy Science (Physics & Statistics)

To understand the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, knowledge of energy physics is necessary. And to be able to conduct research on this topic, statistics is a necessary tool. Students that are interested in the energy transition can take this module to gain knowledge of and insight in the foundations of energy research.

NOTE: following this module does not guarantee direct access to the master Energy Science.

This module has one course taught in English and one taught in Dutch.

Programme
This module consists of two courses:
Period 3: Science of Energy Technologies - 7,5 EC
Period 3: Statistiek NW&I - 7,5 EC

Leerdoelen

After completion of the Science of Energy Technologies course, the student is able to:

  • understand how major energy technologies have emerged from developments in physics
  • apply principles from mechanics to the study tidal power, hydropower, wind power and transport technologies
  • apply principles from electrodynamics and electrochemistry to the study of generation, storage and transmission of electricity
  • apply principles from the physics of matter and its interaction with light to the study of solar cells

After completion of the Statistiek NW&I course, the student is able to:

  • Determine the appropriate statistical analysis method for a research question;
  • Understand the theoretical and mathematical basis of this statistical method;
  • Conduct the statistical analysis in SPSS;
  • Interpret the findings of the statistical analysis;
  • Report on the findings.

Ingangseisen

  • Having passed at least 120 EC from your Bachelor programme including the propaedeutic year
  • Having a background in either life, natural and/or social sciences with a strong affinity in the field of mathematics and in natural sciences (systems analysis, chemistry, physics, biology, energy science)
  • Knowledge about mathematics (integration / differentiation / vectors / trigonometry / logarithms & exponentials) and physics

Rooster

Information about the timetable can be found in MyTimetable. The timetable is definitively known approximately 4 weeks prior to a new teaching period.

Period 3: 3 February 2025 – 11 April 2025

Toetsing

Information about the assessment can be found under 'tests' in the OSIRIS course catalogue for each course. Per course, you can see which assessment methods will be used and how each component has been weighted.

It is important to know that when you register for a course, you are automatically registered for the first test options of that course.

Aanvullende informatie

There is a maximum of 5 places for this module. If there are more interested students, students will be placed in the order of application in OSIRIS.

You can hand in the learning agreement until 15 November 2024.
