Spanish language and culture for beginners
This semester long minor will offer students the opportunity to acquire Spanish language skills within level A2 of the European Framework. The Spanish Language and Culture minor is aimed at students with no previous knowledge of the language. Upon completion of the minor students will be able to express themselves in different contexts, both orally and in writing. The classes of the minor include a variety of interactive activities inspired in different communicative situations.
In addition to working on language skills, students will also get acquainted to different cultural aspects of the Spanish speaking world and will be able to participate in cultural activities.
Students will be assessed by means of written and oral exams and a portfolio of different activities that they carry out in the course of the semester.
Leerdoelen
Monodisciplinary minor with focus on learning Spanish and cultural aspects of Spanish speaking countries. In terms of learning outcomes, students following this minor will be able to achieve level A2.1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which responds to the following description:
- Can express simple opinions or requirements in a familiar context.
- Can understand straightforward information within a known area, such as on products and signs and simple textbooks or reports on familiar matters.
- Can complete forms and write short simple letters or postcards related to personal information.
Ingangseisen
Students whose mother language is Spanish or have already A2 or higher level are not allowed to participate in this minor. The teachers reserve the right to expel students from the minor at any point should they have a higher level of the language.

Toetsing
The assessment of the minor is divided as follows:
- Part A: written exam (20%) – term 1
- Part B: written exam (40%) – term 2
- Part C: Portfolio (20%) – term 2
- Part D: Oral exam (20%) – term 2
- Attendance: P/F. Students are required to attend a minimum of 75% of the classes.
Each exam needs to be a minimum of 4,5. The minimum overall passing grade for the minor is 5,5.
The exams and portfolio assignments are design to resemble real communicative products and situations.
