Dealing with the Brits

The United Kingdom has historically and still today wielded significant influence over Europe and the world. This minor is designed to address the challenges and opportunities presented by Brexit for European professionals.

During the minor you will look at:

  1. Political aspects by exploring UK politics and its connection to the EU;
  2. Business aspects by examining the British market as a potential export destination for European nations;
  3. You will also be part of a project wherein you will use your gained knowledge and skills to organize a conference dedicated to sharing best practices for engaging with the UK post-Brexit.

Next to your teachers, this minor will have a number of external speakers as well as a number of field visits to companies and organisations that deal with the Brits!

Learning Outcome 1: The student can support organisations, institutions and businesses active in Europe in facing challenges related to Europe by analysing issues, evaluating processes, offering advice and solving problems with attention to European business, politics and culture.

Learning Outcome 2: The student can connect the disciplines of European business, politics and culture to solve problems with multi-stakeholder collaboration.

Learning Outcome 3: The student can assist and advise organisations, institutions and businesses on navigating and interacting with the multi-level policy, regulatory and financial frameworks in Europe and managing their impact on organisational operations and goals.

Learning Outcome 4: The student can collaborate professionally in teams & projects to achieve

organizational goals within Europe using a variety of project management tools and techniques.

Learning Outcome 5: The student can network to establish professional relationships and collaborates with intercultural sensitivity.

Learning Outcome 6: The student can research and critically evaluate contemporary issues, linking theory and practice, in order to formulate concrete recommendations for organisations active in a European context.

Learning Outcome 8: The student can develop professional products in different formats, for different audiences, in order to effectively and appropriately communicate with partners/ stakeholders using the English language at C1 level proficiency.

Learning Outcome 9: The student demonstrates ownership of their personal development as a European Professional.

Competencies/ final objectives are always on the university of applied sciences level.

For a transfer minor, these competencies should be derived from the academic competency profiles.

Ingangseisen

No entry requirements for part I (Politics) and part II (Business). The third, the Conference, builds upon knowledge and skills acquired in Parts 1 and 2, necessitating their completion as prerequisites.

1.POLITICS: 5ECTS

Group Component: Students will collaboratively prepare group presentations on various political and cultural facets of the UK.

P/F – to be presented in class (during the semester)

Individual Component: Each student will compose an advisory report for a European Union country of their choice, comparing and contrasting the political landscape of that country with the UK. The report will cover:

Historical context of bilateral relations between the two nations.

Contemporary issues, both positive and negative, affecting these nations.

Insights into intercultural considerations.

Mark – to be handed in in week 10

15 Weekly lectures (2 hrs) and seminars (2 hrs)

 

2.BUSINESS: 5 ECTS

Group presentations will be conducted in class, focusing on different industry segments.

P/F – to be presented in class (during the semester)

In pairs, students will research the process of exporting to the UK and formulate an export plan for an assigned European company

Mark – to be handed in in week 13

15 Weekly lectures (2 hrs) and seminars (2 hrs)

 

3.CONFERENCE: 5 ECTS

In groups of 4/5 students will organize a conference tailored for European companies seeking business opportunities in the UK.

The student will write an individual reflection on project management and group processes.

Mark – the conference will be held in week 14

P/F – reflections to be handed in in week 15

Evaluation of the conference in week 15

15 Weekly lectures (2 hrs) and seminars (2 hrs)

 

As the assessment consists of several partial tests, the result of the test will only be determined if:

- student has achieved a ‘pass’ mark for all partial tests marked on the basis of a ‘pass’ or ‘fail’, and

- the student has at least achieved a grade of 4.5 for every partial test marked with a grade.

If these conditions have been met, the test result will be determined as the weighted average of the results of the partial tests marked with a grade. The minimum result to pass is a 5.5
