Urban Interaction Design

The experience of the city is no longer just physical. Digital media are playing an increasingly important role. No one now leaves the house without a mobile phone, with the online world within reach. You can find the nicest restaurant by scanning the area on your screen and, while waiting at the bus station, you might share a post with your friends about how much fun the evening was. Digital developments have an increasing influence on how people move through the city and interact with each other in public spaces.

Do you want to learn to design beyond the boundaries of your own field? Would you like to work on a project in the city, for a real client? Then participate in the minor Urban Interaction Design.

In the minor Urban IxD you will design places in the city in which digital and physical experiences are interwoven. This requires a transdisciplinary approach, a way of working in which a design is created from multiple perspectives. You work in a team with students from different courses, absorb the knowledge and approach of your fellow students, and together you create new insights and concepts.

The minor starts with a series of bootcamps. Here you gain knowledge of psychology, learn methods from product design, urban planning and digital design. You also learn to critically question developments and design them based on public values. This way you have a common basis to get started. We then conduct field research in Amsterdam and during a city trip in another (European) city. During these weeks we observe how the different disciplines come together in practice. You then work on a design project in (and for) an Amsterdam neighbourhood, in which sustainability, diversity and digitalisation are important themes. You and your team will receive intensive guidance from various coaches, and there are inspiration sessions with designers from professional practice. You work towards an interactive prototype and an exhibition.

Leerdoelen

The minor revolves around the question: How do you design sustainable experiences in an urban environment where the physical and digital are intertwined?

We are working on two learning outcomes:

  • In a complex and changing society, the student designs hybrid urban experiences that safeguard and strengthen public values, taking into account a diverse group of stakeholders, including the planet.
  • The student works constructively together in a transdisciplinary team and actively guides his own growth as a designer.

Ingangseisen

You meet the admission requirements of your own program for taking a minor (see the Teaching and Examination Regulations for your study).

We would love to see:

  • Open mindedness, curiosity;
  • Interest in collaborating with other disciplines;
  • Enthusiasm for designing and making things;
  • Affinity with the Sustainability, Diversity & Inclusion, Digitalisation and the city.

As the entire program is taught in English, participants are required to speak English well and are able to read and understand English texts. This is an intensive minor where independence and a proactive attitude are important. Are you curious, but do you still have questions? Please contact the coordinator.

Students from other design courses are welcome. Please contact us in advance so we can discuss the program and let you know if the minor suits you.

Assessment form

At the end of the minor there is a final assessment based on your portfolio. This is the only time you will receive a grade. In the run-up to this, there are regular assessments without a formal grade. At these times you discuss your interim portfolio and your progress. This will give you a good insight into where you stand and what you still need to do to pass the minor.

We think it is important that you are given the space to experiment and make mistakes, without immediately receiving a grade for it. Throughout the minor you collect material yourself to demonstrate at the end that you meet the learning outcomes. This way of learning requires a lot of independence and a proactive working attitude.

There is a resit option in the weeks after the minor.
