Learn to look and think beyond borders

Develop your knowledge, skills and attitude as a Global Citizen. The minor Global Citizenship focuses on education, social work, health care and employment in which you will become aware of and use your own professional perspective in an intercultural context. Work together with (inter)national students on a project covering the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Learn about different cultures and diversity and learn how to apply your newly acquired approach as a global citizen in your own future profession.

Course content

General Idea: Global Citizenship refers to the knowledge and skills needed to engage in global issues on a local level and to enable people with different backgrounds to work together on goals related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Global Citizenship.

A global citizen can use this knowledge and skills in their own profession. The practice-based, multi-disciplinary and intercultural (diversity) approach of the programme (courses, research- and practical activities) will inspire and motivate you to make Global Citizenship a part of your personal and professional identity.

International dimension: “Meet, work, interact and celebrate life with other students from all over Europe and beyond.”

The Project: Together with an existing organisation and a small group of fellow students you will work on an actual problem related to the SDGs. You will be given the opportunity to really make a change, as you will develop a project plan and implement this within the organisation. The implementation and evaluation of  the project will take place during the second half of the Minor either in the Netherlands or abroad.

Professional and Personal Development: During the whole duration of the Minor you will work on your professional and personal development as a Global Citizen, supervised by a coach.

Target group

 
This minor is open for students, both national and international, with an interest in Health Care, Education, Social Work and Employment.

Course Structure

This minor facilitates students from different study programmes to work together in a multidisciplinary team. We will combine knowledge, insights and skills from your diverse backgrounds to create a dynamic and explorative environment to study Global Citizenship. This all takes place in the context of various practices, especially Health Care, Education, Social Work and Employment.

The following topics are addressed in the minor:

• Global Citizenship in theory and practice 
• Working as a professional in local communities, employment, health care and/or education 
• Intercultural communication and -sensitivity
• Diversity competence 
• National identity – transnational identity 
• Cultural awareness and -diversity 
• Ethics and moral diversity 
• (Anti) Radicalization 

You will work on your project during the classes of the Global Citizenship in Practice (GCIP) in quartile one. You will execute and evaluate your project during quartile two.

A coach will guide you throughout your project work and professional and personal development. 

The language of instruction is English. All students (Dutch and international students) are welcome to join!

Assessment methods

This minor consists of 30 ECs divided in six assessments.

The Project (15 ECTs)
The project is a group assignment in which you work with students with different cultural and professional backgrounds on issues regarding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in an organisation in the Netherlands or abroad. You develop a project plan, implement your project in practice and legitimate and evaluate it ethically and scientifically. During this process you put what you have learned about Global Citizenship into practice.

There are three assessments connected to the project:

• Assessment 1: Project Plan (5 ECs)
• Assessment 2: Project Report (5 ECs)
• Assessment 3: Project Presentation (5 ECS)

Personal and Professional Development (15 ECTs)
You will develop yourself as a Global Citizen and as a future professional by completing various assignments (reports, presentations and other activities) offered in the modules of the minor. Your personal and professional development will be assessed using the following assessments:

• Assessment 4: GC-portfolio 1 (5 ECs)
  • Assessment 4.1: Individual Development Report
  • Assessment 4.2: TED-Talk
• Assessment 5: GC-portfolio 2 (5 ECs)
  • Assessment 5.1: Essay
  • Assessment 5.2: Professional Profile Magazine
• Assessment 6: Professional Development Presentation (5 ECs)
  You present your development as a Global Citizen and future professional based on the learning outcomes of the minor; content of the modules, other assessments, activities, project work and other meaningful experiences.

The application process regarding the Kies op Maat minor at Saxion is a bit different than described at www.kiesopmaat.nl

How does it work?
Step 1: Download the learning agreement from the Kies op Maat website and let it sign by a member of the exam commission at your own educational institution ánd sign the document yourself.
Step 2: go to https://sis.saxion.nl/account# and fill in your personal data
Step 3: you will receive an automatic generated email from IAM including your username and password
Step 4: go the https://sis.saxion.nl, log on with your username and password which you have received from IAM and apply!
Step 5: After this we can process your application for a Kies op Maat minor at Saxion

Please note : in 'Upload documents' you are requested to upload some documents. The following documents we need:

• A copy of your valid passport or ID-card. No driving license!
• A copy of your propaedeutic diploma or a printout from the DUO diploma register. In case you do not have the propaedeutic diploma yet, we would like to receive an official statement from your educational institution in which they state that you will receive the propaedeutic diploma before the start of the minor.
• Learning agreement, page 1, 2 and 3 (signed by a member of the exam commission of your own education institution and student)
• Original Proof of Payment for the study year 2024-2025 (available from June). You can request this proof from your educational institution, also if you pay in instalments. Your educational institution will email the Proof of Payment to Saxion.
  Deadline for handing in the original Proof of Payment is 2 weeks before the start of the minor.
