Sustainable Development (Environmental Impact Assessment & Statistics)

In this module, students that are interested in sustainable development learn about Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) which is a legal instrument used to measure and manage the impacts of a proposed development on the environment and society. Statistics may be used to help answer research questions in the field of sustainable development.

NOTE: following this module does not guarantee direct access to the master Sustainable Development.  

Programme
This module consists of two courses:

Period 3: Statistics GSS - 7,5 EC
Period 3: Environmental Impact Assessment - 7,5 EC

Leerdoelen

After completion of the Statistics GSS course the student is able to:

  • Determine the appropriate statistical analysis method for a research question;
  • Understand the theoretical and mathematical basis of this statistical method;
  • Conduct the statistical analysis in R;
  • Interpret the findings of the statistical analysis;
  • Report on the findings.

After completion of the Environmental Impact Assessment course, the student is able to:

  • Comprehend and critique the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process in the Netherlands and abroad;
  • Recognize the formal (national and international) legal procedures and the political decision-making process associated with the EIA process;
  • Differentiate the roles and motivations of different stakeholders within EIA;
  • Distinguish the role of EIA in decision-making;
  • Examine and evaluate the content of an EIA/SEA;
  • Author and present several group assignments related to different steps within the EIA process;
  • demonstrate the methods of impact assessment and when it is appropriate to use them;
  • Implement skills in cooperation and negotiation through Serious Gaming: roleplay in a real-life EIA case

Ingangseisen

  • Having passed at least 120 EC from your Bachelor programme including the propaedeutic year
  • Interest in societal challenges, such as sustainability
  • Background in natural sciences at havo/vwo level

Toetsing

Information about the assessment can be found under 'tests' in the OSIRIS course catalogue for each course. Per course, you can see which assessment methods will be used and how each component has been weighted.

It is important to know that when you register for a course, you are automatically registered for the first test options of that course.

There is a maximum of 5 places for this module. If there are more interested students, students will be placed in the order of application in OSIRIS.
