Cross-border Migration, Governance and Security - EU perspective

Migration is not only a global phenomenon; it is also one of the most pressing challenges within the European Union. How can 27 member states with different histories, interests and political cultures develop common policies? What happens when national priorities clash with European agreements, or when solidarity is put to the test in times of crisis? Block 2 gives you the chance to explore these questions in depth and to develop the skills to advise on them.

Minor content

This block focuses on the EU dimension of migration. Through a knowledge course you will learn about EU competences, institutions, law and policy frameworks. Case studies and recent crises, such as the Syrian and Ukrainian refugee situations, provide concrete examples of how the EU responds in practice. At the same time, you will continue with a client-based research project, now explicitly connected to EU governance. Training in ethics and conflict helps you to sharpen your moral reasoning, while a volunteering project and a personal leadership module let you connect theory to practice.

Structure of the minor

Block 2 deepens your understanding of EU migration law and policy, multilevel governance, and the relationship between EU and national decision-making. You will practice ethical reflection, intercultural collaboration and leadership, all within the context of real-life assignments.
Structure and assessment
The block blends theoretical and applied learning, combining knowledge acquisition, applied research, and professional development. Assessment takes place in different forms, including knowledge tests, oral assessment and portfolio-based evaluation.
Block 2 is the EU-focused half of the 30 ECTS minor Cross-border Migration, Governance & Security, but it can also be followed independently as a 15 ECTS programme. It is particularly valuable for students interested in European governance, law, and the role of the EU in today’s migration challenges.
