Future Sustainable Urban Regions (15 or 30 ects) (AFR1)

Are you interested in the urban regions of the future and curious about how Climate change, Citizens’ Health and Smart and Circular Technology will affect these regions? This course deals with the challenges of tomorrow’s society, it will prepare you for addressing these challenges from a broad perspective, taking the 23 Sustainable Development Goals into account. Moreover, Location Intelligence is an important aspect of your joint approach. Together with Future Sustainable Urban Regions II you will have the opportunity to follow a full 30 ects minor. In this one, part I, the emphasis is on theoretical foundation.

In the course Climate adaptability we will follow a Design Thinking approach to investigate citizens’ needs regarding climate change and develop innovative solutions at a street-level scale for future-proofing cities. Secondly, you will investigate the impact of heatwaves, droughts, and floods on the region and mapping the key-challenges of the 21st century. Thirdly, you will gain insight into the experiences and needs of user groups during challenging weather events and finally, you learn how to prototype climate resilient interventions at a designated location in the city of Almere for a specific vulnerable user group.

In the course Green and health you will learn about the health and its’ perspectives (salutogenesis, positive health thinking and how to assess health and welfare). The emphasis thereafter is the relation between urban green spaces and health of citizens. How does urban green space affect health and what are the underlying mechanisms ? Moreover, green facades, green roofs and the benefits of urban agriculture initiatives are dealt with in this course.

How can a city be smart AND circular ? That is one of the questions in the course Smart and circular. From the basic principles to exploring best practices at different scales: from local to supra-regional. Individual swarming is also explained and how it works with masses of people.

Finally, in the Location Intelligence course, you will work with static and dynamic 2D and 3D data in order to be able to design great visualisations and maps for professionals and citizens.

You are most welcome to join us, this September 2021 at Aeres Hogeschool Almere, Geo Media and Design.
