Sustainable Urban Regions II (ASUR2) - 15 or 30 ects

Note

As from 2023-2024 ASUR will be 1 fulltime minor of 30 ECTS. There will also be some changes in course details, but the text below does give you a good overall impression of the main topics and focus of the minor. A fully updated text will be available on Kies op Maat at the end of March. Are you interested in the urban regions of the future and are you curious about how Climate change, Citizens’ Health, Circulair Economy and Smart Technology will affect these regions? This course deals with the challenges of tomorrow’s society. With the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in mind, it will prepare you to address these challenges from a broad perspective. Moreover, Location Intelligence is an important aspect of your joint approach. Together with Sustainable Urban Regions II you will have the opportunity to follow a full 30 ects minor. In this one, part II, the emphasis is on applying your knowledge by constructing a concept for urban development and present it using storytelling principles.

The main assignment of this minor part II is working as a group on an advice about sustainable urban area development for an external organization. You will participate as an analyser / advisor in sustainable urban area development.

In the course Sustainable urban region will we focus at the 17 SDGs. You wil get familiar with these SDGs and the underlying context of the SDGs. You will be challenged to translate these goals towards the spatial development of urban regions and challenged to construct cross-overs between the different SDGs.

In the course Smart and circular regions you will learn to describe what the principles and trends are of smart and circular regions. You also will construct regional urban chain-analysis on raw (urban) materials as an important base for smart circular urban development.

In the training Storytelling and storymapping, you will learn the power of a good narrative in communication. You will learn tot apply storytelling principles during the design of storymaps.

And also evaluate the communication of your message with a target audience.

Assessment: advise for urban area development

  • Define an assignment related to Sustainable Urban Regions from an external organisation.
  • Analyse and visualise geodata to gain spatial insight for that organisation.
  • Construct a concept of a future development of a sustainable urban region.
  • Present that concept to a wider audience. 

The sustainable urban region

  • Is able to describe the 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the underlying context of the SDGs
  • Is able to translate these 17 SDGs towards the spatial development of urban regions

The smart and circular region

  • Can describe what the principles and trends are of smart regions

Ingangseisen

You must have a permit of your (applied) University to follow courses/minors at the 4th year Bachelor level.

Rooster

The time required for this minor is 40 hours per week, for 10 weeks (is 400 hours). In addition to the fixed days in the timetable with lectures and tutorials, you will work in groups of 3 to 5 people (mixed groups with different backgrounds).

Period 2 in the weeks: 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41, 42, 44, 47, 48, 49, 50, 51, 2 and 3.
Days: in the morning on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
