Eventmanagement (English)

Events have gained significant importance as a marketing tool. This has resulted in a increased demand for qualified event managers; managers who organise and manage  events successfully with the experience of the visitors in mind.

About this minor

Events evoke a strong attraction, respond to the visitor's experience, can engage a community, raise awareness or put an organisation or activity on the map. They have become part of contemporary society. Companies have also seized on events to achieve commercial objectives.

Every event is unique; you only have one chance to make it a success. That is the challenge, but also what makes its success so vulnerable. Every event has different scenarios and pitfalls. The minor focuses on managing all those aspects that are project-based: a unique task, limited in time and resources.

The minor in Event Management goes through the organisation of an event in different phases and focuses on theory and practice. We train you in the knowledge and skills you need to successfully organise events.

You will work in a group of a maximum of five students. Together, you will be responsible for the design, organisation and implementation of two events: one which you devise yourself and one for an external client.

Self-devised event (Project Event)

The group invents its own event from scratch. This means brainstorming, researching and working out creative ideas to come up with a project plan. You pitch your self-conceived event to an independent jury from the field, which then gives a go or no-go. Examples of events organised by students:Disney vs. Nickelodeon Sing-a-Long, Sip & Paint, Live Podcast, Money Matters, and many others!

Event for external client (Practical assignment)

In the practical assignment, a group ‘adopts’ an event. You work on behalf of an external company or organisation. The group operates independently, but reports to the Hanze coach and the client on a weekly basis on progress and content.

Examples of clients are: University Student Cultural Centre, Dutch Center for Refugees, Innovation House Police, TT City Run, Ronald McDonald House, Hanze University.

Theory and practice

Most lectures take place during the first block of the minor.

Halfway through the semester, you switch from concept to realisation. The second quarte, therefore, focuses on the practical implementation of both the self-devised event and the practical assignment.

Assessment is done by means of assignments, a portfolio, reports and one exam.
