Health, Safety and Environmental Management

The Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Management minor prepares students to assess and address a wide range of HSE challenges across various industries and organizations. From chemical production to aviation, construction to healthcare, and offshore operations to transport and logistics, this program equips students with the skills to effectively manage HSE issues in diverse settings.

The HSE Management minor begins with an introduction to HSE risk analysis and an overview of diverse roles, such as HSE Manager, HSE Officer, and Safety Advisor. The program features units on various HSE topics, some of which align with the requirements for VCA certification (a mandatory Dutch safety certification).

Each unit explores technical principles and, in some cases, legal frameworks, with a focus on applying knowledge to real-world scenarios across industries. Students benefit from guest lectures and at least four site visits to companies like DFDS (a dangerous goods logistics company), Total Lubricants, and Renewi, gaining practical insights into HSE practices.

Key topics covered include: Psychological, Social, and Organizational Safety, Fire Safety, Dangerous Goods Safety (chemical, radiological, biological), Environmental Management (with an environmental impact focus), HSE Performance Evaluation, HSE Plans, and HSE Training.

The specific topics of guest lectures are: Incident Investigations, Environmental and social due diligence – quality check on the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment”, Career paths for HSE professionals and Digital solutions for HSE data management.

The minor concludes with practical opportunities for students to apply their knowledge and skills. They will develop a comprehensive HSE plan for a real-life project, design and deliver an HSE training session, and have the chance to earn a VCA certification. These experiences emphasize students' readiness to provide effective HSE guidance and training to future colleagues and clients, preparing them to excel in professional environments.
