Influential Design & Creative Engineering
What have fermentation home appliance, an electric drift trike, a bicycle airbag, an induction thermal cup and an smart aquarium have in common? All these innovative technical products started as project proposals formulated by students at the start of this minor. Through many loops of researching, designing, building and testing these students challenged themselves to push their boundaries by applying new techniques and technology.
Weekly group coaching by experienced product design engineers, relevant guest lectures and workshops will help you to truly learn by doing. The Hogeschool Rotterdam offers access to academic resources and state-of-the-art workshop facilities for prototyping to realize your product.
Your project ties in with current themes by:
- developing your dream project in ART & ENGINEERING
- deepening your knowledge with other engineers in MIXED TECHNOLOGY
- developing the ultimate instrument or vehicle in DESIGN FOR ONE
- developing and testing your brilliant idea for your own START-UP
- managing multiple business assignments in the DESIGN STUDIO

The minor Influential Design & Creative Engineering offers a challenging learning environment in which you:
· decide for yourself what you are going to do and how you are going to do it within your own project;
· are encouraged to critically reflect on the influence you exert as a product engineer;
· become creative in finding solutions and executing the design process;
· acquire new knowledge and skills, especially outside the school building;
· research, make and test innovative technologies and
· try to make a positive impact with the sustainable development goals as a starting point
· collaborate in multidisciplinary teams in pressure cooker weeks
Leerdoelen
If you have successfully completed this programme then you are able to:
· actively search and try new activities, methodologies and strategies to further a product design;
· involve stakeholders such as end users and experts in your project and using their insights to improve your product;
· research the impact your product makes, improving its positive impact and minimizing its negative impact;
· find, critically assess, learn and implement new knowledge and skills from others and
· share your knowledge and skills with others.
Ingangseisen
You are attending technical education such as Industrial Design (IPO), Mecahnical Engineering (WTB), MTG, Electronics (ELE), Automotive technique (ATE), computer science, technical healthcare education from inside and outside EAS/University of Applied sciences Rotterdam. Students from non-technical courses are also welcome, on condition that you have sufficient baggage to get started building and testing innovative physical solutions. You must also have at least completed your internship.
After your registration you will provide a motivation in which your personal learning outcomes are explained. Describe how these learning outcomes align with the content of this minor. Teacher approval is required for admission. A maximum of 70 participants will be admitted.
Projects must meet the following requirements:
· a lot of building, testing and experimentation must and can be done;
· it is useful for a larger audience than just yourself;
· the project contributes to creating positive impact;
· it requires a lot of outside knowledge;
· it is realistic and practically feasible.
Literatuur
The Delft Design Guide (A. van Boeijen, J. Daalhuizen, J. Zijlstra) is strongly recommended.
Rooster
The minor is divided into four main design phases: Discover, Design, Develop and Deliver. Each phase is filled with masterclasses by teachers, guest lectures and student workshops. A phase ends with an exposition with posters and prototypes. A typical week begins with a kick-off and lecture at the start of the week, coaching or design session in the middle of the week and a concluding activity at the end of the week. All activities are organized mostly offline. In two pressure cooker weeks all student will work on an interesting and challenging assignment from an external client.
Toetsing
The minor does not offer separate knowledge modules with traditional lectures and exams. Instead, a rich learning community is offered with instructions, workshops, pitches, expos, guest lectures and coaching by experienced designers. Professional prototyping facilities and academic knowledge sources of University can be used.
Assessment consists of formative (peer) feedback and expos and a summative assessment of:
· a journal showing weekly progress and feedback;
· a final reflection on the learning outcomes and
· a presentation with poster, prototype and video.
