Create innovative solutions for future proof cities through critical & creative research, multidisciplinary and international collaboration and co-creation as a strategy for innovation.

Cities worldwide are developing interventions and strategies to cope with challenges like climate change, social inequality and economic insecurity. Making cities more resilient towards such challenges by designing more sustainable, inclusive and future proof solutions for current (urban) practices is the focus of the programme Creating Resilient Cities.

Comparative research and working abroad
Making cities more resilient is a complex challenge. During this programme you learn to contribute to that by developing an applicable solution through applied research in Rotterdam and a partner city abroad. While working on your research project you will gain deeper understanding of resilience, learn to approach a resilience challenge from the perspective of your own profession, develop the capacity to design a solution through multidisciplinary and international collaboration and learn to share results through workshops and interactive meet-ups.

Three competencies
These competencies are key making cities more resilient:

Competency 1: Increasing Urban Resilience
To increase urban resilience, professionals will need to research, analyse, compare, design, create, and debate different theories on resilience and explain resilience related challenges from the perspective of their own profession. They translate these insights into a practical research project and conduct comparative research in order to develop applicable and relevant solutions for resilience related problems. Critical, creative researchers reflect on existing knowledge and theory and the offered research assignment. Key-questions they answer are – among others – what applicable, innovative and relevant solutions they can develop in order to support cities in becoming more resilient?
 
Competency 2: Collaborating in a multi-perspective context
Team players in a multi-perspective context are capable of developing solutions by using differences and similarities within teams: personal, intercultural, disciplinary and contextual. They acquire insight into their own perspectives and those of others through interaction and reflection and use this to organize effective teamwork and develop a solutions based on multiple perspectives in order to address the complexity of resilience challenges.
 
Competency 3: Shaping one’s own development
Resilience professionals determine their own position towards resilience theory and practice and make deliberate decisions for future actions with respect to that. They define and organize their own learning process, take position and choose direction with respect to topical resilience debates and promote change towards resilience through joint learning and knowledge exchange. In doing so, they connect and involve relevant stakeholders.

Lectures, excursions, workshops, fieldwork in Rotterdam & abroad and coaching support you in acquiring these competencies.

Completed years of studies
• 3 years of a 4-year Bachelor's degree
• 2 years of a 3-year Bachelor's degree
You will enrol in the 4th year of the programme.

Study area
Students from all fields are welcome to apply with sufficient motivation. Most of our students have a background in the field of Energy and Built Environment, Urban Studies or any other related areas.

Language requirements
All exchange programmes require a good command of English, as all classes are conducted in this language. Although exchange students are not required to submit an official English test score during their application, we would like to stress that exchange students are expected to have an English level similar to IELTS 6.0, CEFR B2 or TOEFL 550 / iBT 80 / 213 cBT. We trust our partner universities to only nominate students who meet this requirement, therefore ensuring they will not face any difficulties in class due to the language.

Aanmeldprocedure 
Ben je een student van een andere onderwijsinstelling en wil je een minor volgen bij Hogeschool Rotterdam dan meld je je in 2 stappen als volgt aan: 
 
1)        Meld jezelf voor de minor van je keuze aan via de blauwe knop Aanmelden. Je vindt deze knop rechtsboven op de pagina van de minor.  
Download de leerovereenkomst en vul deze in. 
Lever deze leerovereenkomst aan bij de examencommissie van je opleiding. Wanneer de examencommissie goedkeuring heeft gegeven, meld je dan uiterlijk 01-07-2025 voor 9.00 uur aan voor de minor in stap 2. 

2)      Meld je na de goedkeuring aan in OSIRIS Aanmelding van Hogeschool Rotterdam via onderstaande link (maak eerst een account aan).

Onderdeel van het aanmelden is het uploaden van de volgende documenten: 
-     De leerovereenkomst ondertekend door jou en door jouw instelling; 
-     Een scan of foto van je Paspoort of ID bewijs. 
 
Je ontvangt van Hogeschool Rotterdam bericht of je aanvraag positief is beoordeeld of niet. 
In OSIRIS Aanmelding moet je ook het Bewijs Betaald Collegejaar (BBC) uploaden voor het collegejaar waarin je de minor wil volgen. Dit kan vanaf 01 mei 2026. Het BBC vraag je op bij jouw instelling nadat je hebt getekend of een machtiging hebt afgegeven voor de betaling van het collegegeld voor het collegejaar waarin je de minor wil volgen. Je kunt ook kiezen voor de optie dat jouw instelling de BBC stuurt naar collegegeld@hr.nl. Je ontvangt van Hogeschool Rotterdam bericht wanneer je aanmelding is goedgekeurd.
