Fashion & Visual Culture

Enrolment is no longer possible for semester 1. The maximum number of participants has been reached for this minor.

For everyone working in the worlds of fashion and fashion communication, an understanding and knowledge of the image is indispensable. This programme immerses you in visual culture in the broadest sense of the word.

This means being able to analyze imagery, to understand different media and the way they work, to be comfortable using the language of images, and to have knowledge of visual history, theories of visual culture and zeitgeist in fashion. This programme aims to help to develop a personal visual style and the actualization of innovative fashionable images.

The programme consists of two parts of 10 weeks, each in which a thorough creative process takes place. The first 10 weeks you will work on creating your own photography, taking a fashion designer as inspiration. The final ten weeks you will work in small groups, and together you will learn how to make a short fashion film. In both the film and photography parts, you will conduct research on a visual and textual level, in which critical thinking on form, style, and meaning are key aspects. The programme concludes with the screening of the fashion films at cinema Het Ketelhuis in Amsterdam.
