Minor Legal International Business professional (LIB) is about cross-cultural collaboration. It prepares you to work with international colleagues and clients by collaborating with German students and (international) visiting students. You will improve your professional English language skills, by expanding your professional vocabulary, enhance your presentation, negotiation and writing skills. You will also learn about (international) contracts, basic international law and intercultural skills by developing a Corporate Social Responsibility strategy and company culture. You will be familiarized with basic skills to negotiate and draft international business contracts. 

Teachings start the last week of August with a day of introduction. Students are expected to be present during the introduction. The minor LIB is a level 2 minor of the AUAS Law department. To successfully pass the exams, including group assignments and an individual assessment, you need to have at least intermediate level in English (CEFR B2). Please note that minor LIB is a full-time minor, meaning you should spend about 40 hours a week to meet the requirements and pass the exams.

3. You improve your professional English language skills.
4. You contribute to the cooperation within the team in a meaningful way, by being proactive and by prioritizing the interests of the group and reflect on your own role within them.

No specific entry requirements. Self-assess whether your current level of English is appr. at a B2-level.

Part of the introduction is a (formative) test for English.

The literature will be sent to the students via email before the start of the semester.

The schedules will be published a week before the first lecture starts at rooster.hva.nl.

Week 1: Introduction 16 hours (including test for English and base line test)

Week 2-19: 2 courses of 3 hours a week in school; 20 hours per week self study. This might be subject to change.

Week 1: Introduction day in last week of August

Participation during the whole day is mandatory. 

The introduction week gives you a basic introduction to the minor, your teachers, your fellow classmates and to working in an intercultural environment. More information will be provided first week of July.

The Business Professional

8 EC individual portfolio assessment

During the first week we will assess the level of your professional attitude with tests for English writing, reading and speaking as well as the 16 personalities test. All this is your starting point to learn (more) English, theory on CSR and intercultural awareness as well as skills to develop the professional attitude that is needed for international business. During the minor you are expected to show qualities like curiosity, empathy and flexibility.

An assessment is the final test for the Business Professional, based on your portfolio that demonstrates your knowledge on CSR, intercultural skills and English language. Collaboration and reflection are also criteria you will be asked about in the assessment.

Professional English

7 EC individual writing assignment(s)

A significant part of the minor is dedicated to Professional English. During the minor you will be trained in both written and oral communication skills. This part includes presentation, negotiation and communication skills, reading and writing skills as well as professional English vocabulary. 

At the end of the semester, you will research and write an individual assignment, which shows the progress you have made in your level of English proficiency in a formal setting.   

Corporate Social Responsibility

5 EC group assignment

This part of the minor aims to familiarize you with the relevant theoretical background to the fundamentals of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). You will explore United Nations Social Development Goals and corporate accountability by applying OECD’s guidelines for Responsible Business Conduct (RBC) to case studies. You will formulate a CSR strategy for a (fictional) international company you create with your team. You will also be familiarized with intercultural theory, which will help you build your company’s culture.

The Contract

10 EC group assignment

During this course you will get acquainted with the theory of negotiating and drafting international contracts. To draft an international contract, you need intercultural skills to deal with international partners as well as negotiation strategies to be able to get what you want while maintaining the relationship. You study the theory on cultural differences and negotiation skills and you train these skills during (in)formal business meetings and negotiations. As part of this course, you will engage in online negotiations with German students, putting your newly gained knowledge and skills into practice right away! Students from Bielefeld (Germany) will visit Amsterdam as part of the contract negotiations.

A resit is possible within the same (first) semester in the academic year.

If a minor is no longer offered or in case the minor is rewritten, the degree programme will offer students a further two opportunities to finalize this minor in the following year.  

Investment:

A visit by students from Bielefeld (Germany) is part of this minor, depending on availability of partners and funds. Students will be notified in due time when applicable, because of possible additional costs for students.
