Diversity in Urban Areas
Our mission is to strengthen social cohesion in urban areas, to find ways to create dialogue, to advocate for equality, emancipation and to be creative in finding ways for people to empower themselves. Knowledge helps us to analyze and understand the mechanisms that play a role in the interactions between (groups of) people within the complexity of the city. (Personal) reflection supports us to approach these mechanisms and to develop our skills. Courage and engagement are necessary to be able to make a difference and create impact.
We would like to illustrate our perspective on diversity through the shape of a tree: 'the diversity tree': A tree has deep roots, a trunk, and several branches. This image could also apply to a society. We will investigate 'decolonization' to understand its roots: what influences does colonization have on us as a society and as individuals? To what extent does this shape our daily activities, norms, and values? Through the theoretical frameworks of intersectionality and superdiversity (our trunk) we can not only look broadly at the different dimensions of diversity, but we can also understand how these dimensions influence each other. These frameworks will be necessary to understand specific themes around diversity in the 'branches': socialization, ethnicity and race, gender and sexuality, class and poverty, (dis)ability, neurodiversity and age. Just like in a real tree, these branches will touch each other during our minor.
This minor provides a solid ground for all students to grow as a person and as a future professional in the field of diversity.
Leerdoelen
For this minor we have listed 7 learning outcomes. All these learning outcomes are based on the mission we described above. Therefore, these outcomes play an important role in different learning activities: your achievements and growth in relationship to these outcomes are measured and will be decisive for the grading. At the end of this program, students should be able to:
1: Detect the challenges regarding social justice and equality that affect groups in society. The student can address and discuss these social challenges by sharing information, through discussion or debate or any other chosen means of communication, in order to advance equality, emancipation and empowerment.
2: Analyze the problems and situations, as ascertained by the student, that deal with diversity and the coexistence of clients and groups within the urban context. The student can support their analyses by using the different concepts and theoretical principles at the core of this course.
3: Assess the knowledge from the mandatory and complemented resources and assess its relevance and effects for their application when carrying out research that takes place in the city regarding the theme of diversity and urban areas.
4: Demonstrate intercultural sensitivity regarding intersectionality when interacting with others.
5: Reflect on their own socialization and actions from a personal, theoretical, and normative framework. Detect and explicit values, standards, beliefs, customs, and taboos, of itself and others, through reflection and relate these insights to personal and occupational actions and consequences.
6: Develop, formulate, and substantiate their own vision on diversity based on knowledge and reflection, relating this to a professional context and linking it to historical and current social developments.
7: An individually formulated learning goal, aimed at personal and/or professional growth in relation to experiences during the minor.

Resit opportunity:
This minor is based on programmatic assessment. All learning outcomes are assessed at least twice during the program. This gives you the opportunity to demonstrate that you have achieved the learning outcomes at different moments. If, at the end of the minor, you still receive a failing grade for two or more assignments, you are allowed to resit one loop assignment in its entirety. The component of “attitude and presence” can only be retaken in the second half of the minor and cannot be retaken at the end of the program.
