Industrial Automation
Experience Industial Automation: System Integrator
Apply the theory in hands-on projects by using real Industrial Robots, PLC's and SCADA. You'll implement processes by integrating sensors, actuators, PLC’s, vision, robots and SCADA. Having all working together. For the main project you'll develop and implement a real factory for an assembly line in which you decide on the processesses, assembly order and communication patterns.
Course content
As a system integrator you will have to get machines commissioned. That means you will have to be able to analyze processes, define interfaces between parts of the process and automation layers, and advise the customer and other stakeholders about different solutions.
This means that you will work in a broad technical environment where you can have very different implementations for similar problems. We have tried to boil this down to 4 terms, The process, The information, Communication and Components. Our lessons will take these 4 terms into account when trying to teach you how to decide on which implementation suits your problem best.
Next to the theoretical approach you will learn how to integrate components and systems, create and implement a working factory on 8 real industrial robot setups, draw conclusions about the result and advise about improvements for an automated process.
This minor is a real hands-on minor where we focus on implementing theory in practical skills. We expect you to (learn to) use tools, connect hardware and dive into learning new things.
Less talking and theorizing and more doing!

If you have a different educational background, a consultation with the Minor Coordinator will be necessary.
It is important that you have knowledge on programming principles (at least successfully finished one course) and know how to work in a (self steering) project team. You need to have a decent laptop and can connect standard UTP network cables (on your laptop or via an adapter). Your mentality and enthousiasm is a very important factor for success. If you come from a purely theoretical education, then you will have to roll up your sleeves and get practical.
Why this minor?
The combination of the increase of information technology and continuous improvement of efficiency has given rise to the need of automating physical processes. The use of information in machines and factories results in more complex production processes (high mix, low volume). Therefor the knowledge on how to connect machines and systems, analyze processes, choose technology and the ability to implement the most suitable solutions has become complex, important and a highly valued skill.

How do I apply?
The application process regarding the Kies op Maat minor at Saxion is a bit different than described at www.kiesopmaat.nl
How does it work?
Step 1: Download the learning agreement from the Kies op Maat website and let it sign by a member of the exam commission at your own educational institution ánd sign the document yourself.
Step 2: go to https://sis.saxion.nl/account# and fill in your personal data
Step 3: you will receive an automatic generated email from IAM including your username and password
Step 4: go the https://sis.saxion.nl, log on with your username and password which you have received from IAM and apply!
Step 5: After this we can process your application for a Kies op Maat minor at Saxion
Please note: in 'upload documents' you are requested to upload some documents. The following documents we need:
- A copy of your valid passport or ID-card. No driving license!
- A copy of your propaedeutic diploma or a printout from the DUO diploma register. In case you do not have the propaedeutic diploma yet, we would like to receive an official statement from your educational institution in which they state that you will receive the propaedeutic diploma before the start of the minor.
- Learning agreement, page 1, 2 and 3 (signed by a member of the exam commission of your own education institution and student)
- Original Proof of Payment for the study year 2025-2026. You can request this proof from your educational institution, also if you pay in instalments. Your educational institution will email the Proof of Payment to Saxion.
Deadline for handing in the original Proof of Payment is 2 weeks before the start of the minor.
If you have further questions, please let us know. You can contact Saxion Service Point, telephone number: 088 – 019 3000.
