Arts & Culture Management
Want to gain general knowledge in the field of Arts and Culture? While in the meantime you specialize yourself in one of the genres or niches within the field of arts and culture? Then Arts and Culture Management is the minor you're looking for!
The general part will concentrate on three major fields: policy, art institutions and works of art. Next to this we distinguish three major forms of art platforms: museums, theatres and music venues.Minor content
By means of research, sharing knowledge, inspiring (guest)lectures and workshops, visits to museums, theatres and other art institutions you will collect the necessary data to write your final report, containing everything you’ve learned. It will give you a broad overview of the arts and cultural sector in Holland and abroad; international students have the opportunity to do research after the sector in their home country! This way we can make interesting comparisons between European or even worldwide trends and developments in arts and culture. It speaks for itself that a one week art trip abroad (the dynamic city of Munich) will be part of this minor and is even compulsory.
In the more specific part of this minor you will choose an artist, a genre, a form of art, etc.. based on your personal preference. You will do a thorough research on this topic, ending in a presentation in which you will explain your choice and link it to the three major fields policy, institutions and works of art. During this presentation you will show two different expressions of art, either made by yourself or by others, related to your topic.
Central to the module is the art and culture company. The question is: what does the management process look like in a theatre/concert venue or a museum? What does the product consist of and who is the customer? These processes and the art product, the annual offer of performances in the theatre and concert halls and the art objects exhibited in the museums as a permanent collection or changing exhibitions will be discussed and investigated in this module.
The final destination of this expedition is that you demonstrate you 'understand' and have developed a vision on the variables of the Dutch (or any other country’s) art and culture sector that play a role in the programming of the theatrical and visual art products (expressions) of subsidized art companies. And that this emphasizes the relevance of art. The three variables from which the art company is highlighted are:
- Operational: business operations, programming, public groups, financial management, subsidies, art marketing, (non-)profit providers of culture.
- Policy: substantive and operational aspects, including subsidy requirements, cultural dissemination, cultural vision, cultural participation, art education.
- Art expression: art philosophy, current offer in the field of theatre/music and studying the visual arts from the point of view of the experience of art, art appreciation based on art, theatre and music history.
By means of individual assignments like presentations, reports, participation, company visits, art trips.
