Work hands-on in multidisciplinary teams on real-life challenges from organisations. With just-in-time theory, you’ll learn by doing in our Design Studio. Discover your designer mindset, grow your network and turn ideas into action. This minor is your launchpad towards innovation, entrepreneurship or a master’s degree.

Minor content

In this minor you tackle real societal and organisational challenges such as sustainability, health, behaviour and system change. You learn design research, stakeholder engagement, systems mapping, ideation and rapid prototyping. Courses and workshops focus on design thinking, co-creation, serious gaming and impact design.

Structure of the minor

You will work in our Design Studio: a creative, welcoming learning environment where collaboration, experimentation and personal growth are central. Students, lecturers and master students work closely together in an open and supportive community.
The minor takes one semester (30 ECTS) and consists of two 8-week periods (2 x 15 ECTS). You work in the Design Studio days on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Monday and Friday are for self-study and project work.
Each period starts with a real challenge from external partners. Think for example, of an Wadden Islands challenge, a circular challenge, or participation in the municipality. You follow the full design process: research, insights, concepting, prototyping and testing. You receive workshops, masterclasses and coaching from lecturers, professionals and master students.
Using design methodologies such as:

  • System mapping and visualisation
  • Design Research
  • Co-creation and stakeholder involvement
  • Rapid prototyping
  • Serious gaming techniques

You develop three learning outcomes that you will continuously work on:

  • Design skills & design research: Together with stakeholders, you will tackle challenges and design replicable and methodical interventions.
  • Justify & persuasion: You can explain to stakeholders in a reproducible way why the challenge is complex, important, and relevant. You will choose a suitable format and medium for this.
  • Designer mentality: You demonstrate a proactive and creative approach to challenges. You dare to experiment with design and research techniques and can continuously reflect on your own process and results.
You work interdisciplinary, work together professionally and build a portfolio that shows your growth. No mandatory books; literature is provided. The minor is an excellent stepping stone to the Master’s programm
