International Strategic Communication & Sustainable Development (15 or 30 EC)

Our world has turned into a global village. The inter-connectedness and -dependency between the nations is ever increasing. Do you want to be the skilled communication expert governments, companies, organizations/NGO’s are looking for?

This course can be taken in two variants: one of 15 EC and one of 30 EC.

Communicate (for) a better world

The minor focusses on completing students’ knowledge in strategic corporate communications (in an international context) and acquiring advanced skills in intercultural communication. Special attention will be given to societal issues (corporate social responsibility and creating shared value) and sustainable development. What contribution can strategic communication make to attain the Sustainable Development Goals?  In an international classroom students will broaden both their professional and personal horizon.

Students will: 

  • gain knowledge about and insight in (international) corporate communication, cross cultural communication, corporate social responsibility (ESG -criteria | ecological, social and governance) and sustainable development
  • learn how to use communication to help solve societal issues
  • develop a profound interest in international and intercultural issues
  • deepen their cross cultural sensitivity
  • acquire skills to work and communicate in an international and multicultural setting
  • be able to make a thorough analysis of an organisation’s CSR efforts and her corresponding communication practices
  • develop a sensitive ethical awareness about truthful, transparent and accountable practises and communication

Ingangseisen

All students are welcome to participate in this minor. However, we expect students to have a basic knowledge about strategic communication/journalism.

Further entrance requirements:

  1. You must have successfully completed the propaedeutic phase.
  2. Furthermore, we expect you to possess competency level 2 (post propedeutic). This means the following:

- We assume that you can analyze complexity, design learning tasks, and collaborate both independently and interdisciplinarily.

- We encourage you to use different perspectives and engage in dialogue with other disciplines and cultures.

- Throughout the minor we also ask you to reflect critically on content, context, process, your own person, profession, and worldview.

Toetsing

The learning environment consists of (online) lectures, self-study, online, group  and individual assignments and an excursion.
 

  • Cultural Encounters (5.0 EC): Communication is a tool in processes of both ‘binding’ and ‘bridging’.  Cross cultural communication skills and diversity competence are required in a global multi-cultural society.
  • International Strategic Communication (5.0 EC): Strategic communication is aimed at building sustainable relations with internal and external stakeholder groups. For governments, companies and organizations sustainable communication is a prerequisite to earn (societal) trust.
  • Sustainable Development (5.0 EC): What role can communication play in finding solutions to ‘wicked problems’ related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice?

Aanvullende informatie

With this minor, you have two choices:
- You take the first part of the minor, of 15 EC.
- You take the entire minor, covering the entire semester. For this you will receive 30 EC.

 

Procedure after registration:

  1. Download your learning agreement(s) then send a request to your own examination board with your signed learning agreement(s) attached.
  2. Pending the decision of your examination board, we reserve the minor place(s);
  3. Your own examination board gives approval by signing the learning agreement(s) and affixing a stamp from your college;
  4. You mail this signed and stamped learning agreement(s) to kiesopmaatminors@che.nl;
  5. After the learning agreement(s) are received at kiesopmaatminors@che.nl, you will receive an email detailing the steps you need to take to finalize your application for the minor(s).
