Language Coaching in Bilingual Education

Are you interested in working in a school that offers bilingual education (TTO)? As an English teacher you will most likely play an important role in such an environment. Bilingual education means that more than half of all school subjects in the lower forms (onderbouw) will be offered in English. For example, maths in English, history in English, etc. The didactic approach teachers use in these classes is called Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). Usually, CLIL-teachers receive support from their English colleagues in terms of language coaching, but also in creating activities that not only convey content but also focus on language development of their pupils. 

Would you be interested in learning more about CLIL and about language coaching? Then you should definitely choose this minor.

Learning aims:

In your classes on campus, you will learn more about CLIL didactics and bilingual education in the Netherlands. You will learn about language coaching and the special role English teachers can hold in tto. Next do this, you will have two days of teaching practice (stage) per week.

Additionally, you will learn more about the importance of internationalisation and how to set up an internationally-oriented project

Leerdoelen

In classes on campus students will learn about

- CLIL didactics and principles

- language coaching techniques aimed at coaching peers

- aspects of language relevant in different school subjects

- how to foster language awareness in CLIL teachers and subsequently their students

- intercurricular collaboration activities that foster second language learning and internationalisation

 

In teaching practice, students will learn:

- language coaching techniques and CLIL didactics

- the challenges CLIL students and CLIL teachers face  

- what is expected of language coaches, CLIL teachers, and CLIL coordinators

- what their personal feed forward is

 

In teaching practice, students will become (more) skilled at:

- coaching teachers to improve their own language skills and how to facilitate their pupils’ language learning

- researching CLIL-related topics, analysing CLIL students’ learning, and evaluating CLIL teachers’ performance

- advising teachers and management

- setting CLIL-related personal learning goals, reflecting on their learning process, and formulating CLIL-related feed forward

Aanvullende informatie

De minor gaat van start bij voldoende inschrijvingen. Toelating geschiedt op volgorde van inschrijving. Houd er rekening mee dat een minor niet door kan gaan vanwege te weinig aanmeldingen of dat een minor vol kan zijn.

Zorg ervoor dat je leerovereenkomst voor het einde van de inschrijfperiode ondertekend is en per mail bij de contactpersoon binnen is.

Let op; deeltijdstudenten betalen vaak een lager bedrag aan collegegeld dan het collegegeld dat voor de deeltijd of voltijdopleiding staat waar zij de minor willen volgen. Houd er rekening mee dat je in dat geval het verschil zelf dient te betalen.
