De minor Dance Industry leidt studenten op die een ambitie hebben in de specialistische, dynamische en internationale branche van de elektronische dansmuziek, op het gebied van communicatie en commerciële economie. Te denken valt aan beroepen als eventontwikkelaar, (online) marketeer, labelmedewerker, artiestenmanager en boeker. De minor wordt aangeboden in een Nederlandstalige en een Engelstalige versie.

Deelnemers aan de minor leren een dance-organisatie te vertegenwoordigen en te werken binnen de bedrijfsidentiteit en die van de dancecultuur. Studenten leren daarnaast in drie cases, op basis van grondig onderzoek, innovatieve, conceptueel en maatschappelijk waardevolle producten te ontwikkelen en vermarkten voor de branche. Ook bouwen deelnemers individueel aan professionele en persoonlijke leerdoelen, doen ze werkervaring in het veld van de dance-industrie op en ontwikkelen ze een netwerk in die branche.

Dit alles gebeurt in een nauwe, uitdagende samenwerking met relevante spelers uit diverse geledingen van de dance-industrie. Zoals Amsterdam Dance Event (educatiepartner van Fontys ACE), ALDA, festivals, clubs en diverse (bekende) dj’s en hun managers.

• Marketing en communicatie in de dance
• Dj/producers en artiestenmanagement
• Dancelabels en het releasen van elektronische muziek
• Juridische aspecten van de dance-industrie
• Dance-events (van concept-ontwikkeling tot productie)
• Partnerships en sponsoring​ binnen de dance

Het programma wordt zowel in het Nederlands als het Engels aangeboden. Optioneel zijn er ook in de Nederlandstalige versie internationale opdrachten, net als incidentele gastcolleges met Engels als voertaal. De Nederlandstalige minor heeft een maximumcapaciteit van 45 studenten. Voor de internationale groep (bedoeld voor studenten van buitenlandse partner-academies van Fontys ACE en voor Nederlandse studenten die zich internationaal willen ontwikkelen) geldt een limiet van 25 plaatsen.

Het programma van de minor wordt hoofdzakelijk aangeboden op de academie van Fontys ACE: gebouw P8, gelegen op onderwijsgebied Stappegoor in Tilburg.

Studenten met een opleiding in commerciële economie, communicatie, vrijetijdsstudies, media- en entertainment zijn direct toelaatbaar. Voor overige studenten geldt dat ze hun geschiktheid moeten aantonen via een cv en motivatiebrief. Vanzelfsprekend is affiniteit met de branche van de elektronische dansmuziek een pre, aangezien het programma zich hier volledig op richt. Kernvakken die van pas komen bij deelname zijn onder meer marketing & communicatie, muziek, entertainment en onderzoek.

• Conferentie-case (groepsopdracht): het onderzoeken van relevante trends en ontwikkelingen binnen de dance-industrie en deze vertalen in een conferentieprogramma. Educatiepartner: Amsterdam Dance Event.
• Release-case (individuele opdracht): het op de markt brengen van een track, EP of album van – en in samenwerking met - een zelfgekozen dj/producer binnen de elektronische muziek.
• Event-case (groepsopdracht): het conceptueel ontwikkelen en realiseren van een vernieuwend dance-evenement.
• Work (individuele opdracht): het zelfstandig werken aan zelfgekozen projecten voor dance-organisaties en – mede daardoor – het ontwikkelen van een netwerk in de branche.

Heb jij al nagedacht over je minorkeuze? Wil je jezelf verder in je vak verdiepen, of juist iets totaal anders doen? Je minorkeuze kan best lastig zijn. Het belangrijkste is dat je iets kiest dat écht bij jou past. Zo kun je jezelf onderscheiden van anderen en je studie nog persoonlijker maken. Maar hoe kies je dan? En waaruit kun je kiezen?  

(Online) minor voorlichtingsweek
Om je te helpen met je keuze organiseren we een (online) minor voorlichtingsweek in november. Tijdens deze voorlichtingen kom je meer te weten over de inhoud van de minoren en kun je eventuele vragen stellen. Vanaf oktober kan je je hier inschrijven voor de voorlichtingsweek.  

De inschrijving voor minoren die starten in februari gaat op 1 juli open en sluit op 15 december. De inschrijving voor minoren die starten in september gaat op 1 februari open en sluit op 1 juli. De Nederlandstalige minor Dance Industry zit doorgaans vroeg vol. Zorg dus dat je jouw keuze op tijd maakt.

The minor Dance Industry educates students who have an ambition in the dynamic, specialized branch of electronic dance music (EDM), focusing on communication and commercial economy. Examples of professions of target are: event managers, (online) marketeers, A&R and label managers, bookers and artist managers.

Participants of the minor learn how to represent an electronic dance music company and how to work within a corporate identity and the culture of the industry in general. Based on comprehensive research and spread over 3 challenging cases, students learn to develop innovative, valuable dance music concepts, and to bring them into the market. Last but not least, within the Network@Work programme, participants individually work on professional and personal challenges and goals which will help them to work in the industry, while also growing their network within the business.

All this is embedded in a close and challenging collaboration with (international) key players from diverse departments of electronic dance music’s industry. Examples are: Amsterdam Dance Event (education partner of Fontys ACE), IMS Ibiza, music venues, EDM Festivals and various (well known) DJs and their managers.

English Proficiency

The international edition of the minor Dance Industry runs in English and works with international clients. The minimum level of English required will equate to the level of IELTS 6.0 (International English Language Testing System) or TOEFL iBT 80 (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or CEFR B2 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Dutch students: only students with an education in commercial economy, communications, leisure, media and entertainment are accepted directly. Candidates from non-related studies have to prove their capability through a résumé and a motivation letter. Of course, affinity with electronic music and its culture and industry is needed, because the programme is fully focused on it. Core subjects are: marketing and communication, music, entertainment and research.

In case there are not enough applications for the international version, it may be canceled, or (Dutch speaking) students are offered to participate in the Dutch group. If there are too much applications for the minor, students may be placed on a waiting list.

How will your course programme be recognized by your home university?

Fontys will provide you with a so-called ‘Transcript of Records’, which will clarify the results that you have achieved. Depending on your results, you will receive a maximum of 30 ECTs credits. ECTs credits are recognized throughout Europe. The agreement between your home university and Fontys University of Applied Sciences will usually include a condition whereby the credits that you obtain will be recognized and transferred into the records kept by your home university.

Students take diverse routes to register for this minor: exchange students through our international office and Dutch higher education students (from schools other than Fontys) through ‘kiesopmaat.nl’. Waiting to register for the minor of your choice because of the shown availability is not advisable and might result in you being too late and the minor being full.

Testing

• Conference case (group assignment): researching/spotting trends and developments within the electronic dance music industry and translating them into a conference programme and production. Education partner: Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE).
• Release case (individual assignment): launching electronic music onto the market as an artist manager, in collaboration with a DJ/producer of choice.
• Event case (group assignment): developing a new and valuable event concept in which electronic dance music is programme.
• Network@Work (individual assignment): realizing a set of individual professional and personal challenges within the EDM industry, while also growing a network within the business.
