Als student, consument en als wereldburger ben je met de keuzes die je elke dag maakt, betrokken bij veel actuele mondiale ontwikkelingsvraagstukken. De minor Global Development Issues (GDI) is bedoeld voor studenten die geïnteresseerd zijn in het doorgronden van dit soort vraagstukken. Hierbinnen valt te denken aan grootsere onderwerpen zoals ongelijkheid, globalisering, duurzaamheid, interculturele communicatie en rechtvaardigheid, die vervolgens geconcretiseerd zullen worden in tastbare vraagstukken.

Als je niet alleen meer te weten wilt komen over deze vraagstukken op basis van theorie, maar ook wilt meewerken aan kleinschalige oplossingen tijdens een praktijkstage in het buitenland*, is deze minor perfect voor jou!

Inhoud:

De minor GDI bestaat uit drie theoretische cursussen en een praktijkgerichte cursus. Je sluit de periode af met een zes weken durende stage in het buitenland*. In deze minor wordt gebruik gemaakt van wetenschappelijke literatuur om denkbeelden te bestuderen, concepten toe te lichten en bij het analyseren van diverse ontwikkelingsvraagstukken.

De vier cursussen binnen de minor zijn:

1 Inleiding in het ontwikkelingsvraagstuk

Bij het vak Inleiding maak je aan de hand van actuele casussen kennis met mondiale ontwikkelingsvraagstukken. Ook ga je, met behulp van theorieën, op zoek naar verklaringen voor het ontstaan ervan. Tevens worden diverse perspectieven en verschillende dimensies (economisch, politiek, sociaal-cultureel en ecologisch) aangereikt om deze ontwikkelingsvraagstukken te begrijpen en te analyseren.

2 Cultuur en interculturaliteit

Binnen deze cursus leer je om culturen te analyseren aan de hand van theoretische concepten. Tevens leer je de centrale waarden van je eigen cultuur kennen en het belang van deze waarden in het oordelen over, en communiceren met, anderen.

3 Rechtvaardigheid

Ontwikkelingsvraagstukken kunnen ook gezien worden als verdelingsvraagstukken. Is de manier waarop (hulp)middelen verdeeld zijn/worden rechtvaardig? Dit oordeel is niet alleen gebaseerd op feiten maar hangt ook samen met verschillende theoretische opvattingen over rechtvaardigheid. Uiteindelijk kom je tot een eigen opvatting over wat rechtvaardigheid is.

4 De Meesterproef (incl. stage)

In de Meesterproef komen alle onderdelen van de minor samen wanneer je zes weken stageloopt bij een project in het buitenland*. Tijdens deze stage zal je inhoudelijke onderdelen uit de andere cursussen koppelen aan je praktijksituatie.  Tijdens de klassikale bijeenkomsten van deze cursus word je goed voorbereid op je stage (verblijf, de lokale omstandigheden, de cultuur, etc.).

Belangrijk: aan het verblijf in het buitenland zijn kosten verbonden, evenals aan de organisatie rondom een visum, vaccinaties, e.d. Hoe hoog de kosten zijn hangt o.a. af van de bestemming en het stageproject!

* in goed onderling overleg is een geschikte stageplek in Nederland ook een optie.

Aan het einde van de minor (20 weken) heb je geleerd om mondiale ontwikkelingsvraagstukken te signaleren en te analyseren, en heb je ervaren hoe je een bijdrage zou kunnen leveren aan mogelijke oplossingen.

Deze kennis, inzichten, en vaardigheden zullen in je verdere loopbaan (en leven) een waardevolle aanvulling blijken!

Iedere HBO-student met een afgeronde propedeuse is welkom.

De literatuur zal veelal in het Engels zijn (voor de Engelstalige groep zelfs volledig in het Engels zijn).

Deze minor wordt zowel in september als in februari aangeboden. De minor kent grofweg 15 fysieke college-uren en wordt geroosterd over maximaal 5 werkdagen (het streven is over 4 werkdagen). Tevens zijn er incidenteel “buiten-het-rooster-om” activiteiten die soms in de avond zullen plaatsvinden.

De toetsing van de minor bestaat uit een combinatie van schriftelijke tentamens, individuele- en groeps (schrijf)opdrachten, presentaties en het bijwonen van gastcolleges.

Minorregeling

Je kunt hier de minorregeling downloaden. Het doel van de minorregeling is om je te informeren over wat je als student gaat leren in de minor, hoe de toetsing eruit ziet en wanneer je de minor hebt afgerond. Aan de minorregeling kunnen studenten rechten ontlenen.

Deze minor wordt aangeboden door Fontys Lerarenopleiding Tilburg (FLOT).

De colleges worden gegeven op de campus Stappegoor in Tilburg.

Het succesvol afronden van deze minor levert 30 EC aan studiepunten op.

ENGLISH VERSION:

A world will open up for you!

As a student, consumer and world citizen, the daily choices you make have an impact on many current global development issues. The minor Global Development Issues (GDI) is intended for students who are interested in understanding these types of issues. This includes topics such as inequality, globalization, sustainability, intercultural communication and justice, which will then be concretized into tangible issues.

If you not only want to learn more about these issues based on theory, but also want to contribute to small-scale solutions during a practical internship abroad*, this minor is perfect for you!

Content:

The GDI minor consists of three theoretical courses and a practice-oriented course. You conclude the minor with a six-week internship abroad*. This minor uses scientific literature to study ideas, explain concepts and analyze various development issues.

The four courses within the minor are:

1 Introduction to global development issues

In the Introduction course you will be introduced to global development issues via current case-studies. By using theories, you will also look for explanations for its origins. Consequently, you will use various perspectives and different dimensions (economic, political, socio-cultural and ecological) in order to understand and analyze these development issues.

2 Culture and interculturality

Within this course you will learn to analyze cultures using theoretical concepts. You will also learn about the central values ​​of your own culture and the importance of these values ​​in judging, and communicating with, others.

3 Justice

Development issues can also be seen as (re)distribution issues. Is the way in which resources are available fair? This judgment is not only based on facts, but is also related to different theoretical views on justice, such as equality and equity. Ultimately, you come to your own view of what justice entails.

4 The Final project in practice (incl. internship)

During the Final project in practice, all parts of the minor come together when you do a six-week internship abroad. Throughout this internship you will link substantive components from the other courses to your practical situation. In the classroom meetings of this course, you will be extensively prepared for your internship (stay, local conditions, culture, etc.).

Important: the internship will come with additional costs, like stay and travel abroad, as well as with the organization of a visa, vaccinations, etc. The costs depend, among other things, on the destination and the internship project!

*in mutual agreement a suitable internship in the Netherlands is also an option.

 

By the end of the minor (20 weeks) you have learned to identify and analyze global development issues, and you have experienced how you could contribute to possible solutions.

This knowledge, insights and skills will prove to be valuable in your further life and career.

Every university of applied sciences student with a completed propaedeutic year is welcome.

The literature will be completely in English.

This minor is offered in both September and February. The minor has roughly 15 physical lecture hours and is scheduled over a maximum of 5 working days (the aim is 4 working days). There are also occasional “off-schedule” activities that will sometimes take place in the evening.

Testing within this minor consists of a combination of written exams, individual and group (writing) assignments, presentations and attending guest lectures.

This minor is offered by Fontys Teacher Training Tilburg (FLOT).

The lectures are given on the Stappegoor campus in Tilburg, Netherlands.
