International Pop Culture
Unique educational concept
Within the Popular Culture program of the Minerva Academy of Pop culture, all students are working on their own projects that come directly from practice, so no simulations. For the minor student, this means that he/she/them needs to have an idea of the project he/she/them wants to work on at the start. For this type of education, the student must be able to work independently, not be afraid to take initiative and be able to take responsibility for the project.
Core program
The teaching staff of the Academy is organized in a so-called community of learners, the production house. A learning environment is where, through presentations, reflection, research, debate, guest lessons and excursions, the student develops knowledge that can be applied in the project's execution. The student will focus on R&D (artistic research) entrepreneurship and project coaching (organization).
In addition, every student will work in two different Labs from the point of view of a professional role from which he/she/them will approach the project. Each student works on different roles: Writer/composer songwriting, Writer/composer production, Performer or Designer/visualizer graphics or Designer/visualizer time based media. In the labs the focus is on making and experimenting.
Leerdoelen
Core task basis (FALL and SPRING)
All students work during the minor on core tasks linked to the artistic process. The Fall Semester focuses on core tasks 2, 3 and 6. In short, it means that the student starts to formulate and develop an artistic concept, then experiments which he/she/them is going to do to further develop that concept and at the end each student has to write a grant application with budget for an interdisciplinary project and submit it to the field of work. There is a concrete budget available for the best applications that can be realized.
The Spring Semester focuses on core tasks 1, 4 and 5. The emphasis is on artistic research into trends, making an artistic performance that the student presents to a live audience and the organization, planning etc of the own project. For example, a performance might include Spoken Word/Storytelling, an installation, an exhibition, a podcast or musical/theatrical/pop performance. For each core task, you will deliver a mandatory professional product that will be assessed.
Knowledge base
Each semester focuses on 2 knowledge base modules. The Fall semester focuses on Knowledge base Vision developing and concepting and Knowledge base Pop Culture as a phenomenon. The Spring semester focuses on Knowledge base artistic entrepreneurship and Knowledge base Sound, visuals and media. These modules are more theoretical based.
(FALL) Knowledge base Vision developing and concepting In this course you will learn what a creative concept is, look for good examples of creative concepts and develop a unique concept yourself, which you will develop into a working prototype in experiments.
(FALL) Knowledge base Pop Culture as a phenomenon In this course you will research the history and actuality of pop culture. Different perspectives on pop culture will be highlighted. Subcultures, and specific movements will be examined.

Toetsing
For the Minor are 30 EC achievable. At the Academy of Popular Culture, we don't work with numbers. The core task is either sufficient or insufficient. During the process, the student receives formative (developmental) feedback and at the end a summary portfolio assessment for the production house and lab classes. The student creates a portfolio in which professional products per core task are provided, a process description and a reflection on the artistic development. The advanced coretasks and the off course will be reviewed by the instructors at the end of the semester.
