Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of (embedded) devices that contains electronics, sensors, actuators and software. These devices are connected, which allows these devices to interact over the internet, exchange data, monitored and controlled. The IoT architecture makes it possible to make the network scalable and secure.
The IoT involves extending Internet connectivity beyond standard devices, such as desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablets, to any range of traditionally dumb or non-internet-enabled physical devices and everyday objects. The IoT is implemented in the cloud via edge computing.

In this programme, we will discuss the whole IoT architecture:
- Analogue and digital signals processed by local embedded systems (edge computer).
- Communication (wired or/and wireless) between edge computer and cloud computer.
- Busses, protocols, databases and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to control actuators and inform users.
- Besides the technical aspects, human aspects, ethics and privacy are considered.
Specifically, we use the IoT components of Microsoft Azure.

  • The student has an overview of the architecture of an IoT system.
  • The student can apply edge computing to process sensor output and actuator input.
  • The student can connect an edge computer to the cloud.
  • The student can store data from the edge computers into cloud databases
  • The student can apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to the data.
  • The student can implement security standards in an IoT environment.
  • The student can apply the architecture of an IOT system in a project.
  • The student takes ethics and privacy in consideration in the IoT system development.

Ingangseisen

Students need to have obtained 105 ECTS credits at undergraduate level in Electrical Engineering or Information Technology (ICT).

Toetsing

Written exams, assignments and a project.

Rooster

Fulltime, daytime scheduled education in semester 1

This programme will be conducted from Assen, which is approximately 20 minutes from Groningen by train. Students must be prepared to either find/accept accommodation in Assen, or be aware of additional costs of daily travel from Groningen to Assen.
