Re-imagining Tomorrow through Arts & Sciences (RASL)
RASL minor+
(This programme is only taught in person, not online—unless specified differently).
Content:
How can we learn to address the 21st century's complicated concerns (such as waste, climate change, global poverty, and so on)? These concerns vary in size, complexity, and scale, necessitating methods, attitudes, and knowledge that transcend disciplinary boundaries. Alternative futures must be conceived and visualized, and this can only be accomplished by combining and validating various bits of knowledge (societal, artistic, intellectual), which will allow us to begin to construct, re-imagine, and decompose and recompose.
In this minor, students from various fields and backgrounds develop theoretical competencies in transdisciplinary research. They collaborate with teachers and community partners to create an environment in which theory and practice, as well as academic and artistic practices, interact to identify and reframe a complex societal issue. This minor was designed to promote transdisciplinary learning and collaborative research within and beyond the arts and sciences. While there are numerous definitions of trans-disciplinarity, we use terms to allow different disciplines and knowledge to intersect and investigate what occurs when they do. We are interested in discovering new ways of investigating, thinking, and making by questioning and collapsing these limits.
Format:
We do not teach you a specific method of conducting collaborative, transdisciplinary research. Instead, we provide you with the space, examples, ideas, and resources to develop your own unique approach to cooperating in a transdisciplinary setting while regularly reflecting on the process.
Learning Outcomes:
- You can select, map, and frame a complex societal concern from a specific angle using collaborative undisciplinary/transdisciplinary research;
- You can reflect on how you interact with and position yourself in relation to your fellow students, the researched topic, your audience, and the specific context in which you work.
- You can work together to create a transdisciplinary approach for multi-sensory and situated research.
- ·You can show how the research relates to current academic, artistic, and/or societal practices.
- You can work and conduct research within and from a specific societal context.
- ·You can justify and accept responsibility for the decisions you make throughout the learning and research process.
