Music Marketing and Management

If you are an enterprising, creative, driven, focused and internationally minded individual with a passion for the music industry, then you are the right fit for our Music Marketing and Management minor! 

The program introduces you to the business of entertainment, and specifically the multi-faceted music industry, while giving you the opportunity to speak with and learn from top (inter)national professionals from the sector. 

You can also follow this minor as a part-time student. Ask the minor contact person for the possibilities. 

Content

HU’s Minor Music Marketing and Management covers most aspects of the music industry, including Music Marketing, Music Events, Music Accountancy & Rights and Music Management. The purpose of the program is to introduce you to the music business, while giving you the opportunity to speak with and learn from top music industry professionals in a relaxed but professional classroom environment. This program teaches you how to create an experience, how to market a music release, event or an artist and how to become a successful manager in the music industry.

The programme takes place during one semester and contains the following courses:

Music Marketing: 5EC

Music Event Marketing: 5EC

Music Accountancy & Rights: 5EC

Music Management: 5EC

Project: 10EC

Please note that the programme reflects a (logical) bundle of courses/subjects and should normally be followed as such. It is not possible to combine (two or more) programmes in one single period.

Project

An important part of the Minor Music Marketing and Management is the Project Music Marketing & Management. This project is comprehensive and complementary to the other courses that are offered in the Minor. In Project MMM, students participating in the MM & M minor are expected to implement the acquired theoretical knowledge to the professional practice.

Leerdoelen

  • The student can work in different project groups; 
  • The student masters and can explain basic and in-depth knowledge of entertainment, music marketing, communication, media and marketing tools; 
  • The student can apply their knowledge about music marketing in the professional practice; The student can present their findings, the resulting conclusions, ideas and concepts in a professional manner (presentations and pitches); 
  • The student can create and present an operational (music) marketing (communication) plan; 
  • The students can defend their knowledge, findings and experiences during assessment and support their arguments in an research report, whereby all requirements regarding proper reporting are met; 

Ingangseisen

To enter this program, a foundation of introductory course(s) in Marketing and/or Management is a pre. Further, you need to have attained English language skills at CEFR level B2. 

Literatuur

The following literature will be discussed during the minor. You will receive a definite reading list before the start of the minor.

  • Events Management: Bowdin, G., J. Allen, W. O’Toole, R. Harris and I. McDonnell, 3rd edition

Rooster

This minor programme takes place in both autumn and spring. The timetable and the teaching days are not yet known.

With the exception of the first teaching period of the academic year (starting September), the lesson and test schedules are always posted on Mijn Rooster four weeks before the start of each teaching period. The schedule for the first teaching period of the academic year can be found on the site three weeks before the start. The most up-to-date schedule is always visible on Mijn Rooster. 
At HU, full-time education may be scheduled between 08:30 and 19:00.

Toetsing

For each course:

  • Report: 80%
  • Pitch/presentation: 20%

Project:

  • The final report of the project case (group work): 50% of the final grade
  • Individual Report (POP): 50% of the final grade

Signed learning agreements for minors in period AB can be uploaded up to and including 23 June 2023 in Osiris Application, see the instructions on the learning agreement. Learning agreements that are received after 23 June will not be processed.  

Signed learning agreements for minors in the CD period can be uploaded up to and including 8 December 2023 in Osiris Application, see the instructions on the learning agreement.  
Learning agreements that are received after 8 December will not be processed.  

Please note: Learning Agreements will be considered in order of entry in Osiris Application (first come, first serve). A submitted learning agreement will not entitle you to a spot within a minor unless the following is the case: 

* The minor is not yet full: each minor has a maximum number of places per period 

* The student has submitted the learning agreement in full (including his/her own details and signature and the stamp of the examination board). 

* HU has signed and stamped the learning agreement
