Bridging Borders: Working in a Globalized Way
“Globalization Is Over. The Global Culture Wars Have Begun.” (NY Times, 2022)
“Breakingviews: Globalization woes create new winners and losers” (Reuters, 2023)
“Has Globalization Given Way to Regionalization?” (HBR, 2023)
“World Trade Report 2023 makes case for “re-globalization” amid early signs of fragmentation” (WTO, 2023)
We live in a world where for many aspects of our personal and professional lives we rely on people and processes on the other side of the border and therefore need to be able to transcend our own national and cultural environment and we become a part of a globalized world
Take for instance the led strip you buy at Action. It is manufactured in China and shipped to all corners of the globe. Take also the knowledge migrants who move to other cities, countries and continents and need to find their way around living and working in various new “team” settings. What about hybrid workers who, through technological advances, can choose to work anywhere they please as long as they have access to the internet. Or the Amsterdam city official, who needs a cross-cultural outlook, as many citizens of Amsterdam are non-Dutch. Imagine how companies need to constantly make decisions on how and where they produce, how and where they buy and how and where they transport. What is the rationale behind those decisions? And what about the decisions we, as individuals and consumers, make? And what are your thoughts and opinions on the topic?
Our minor offers you different aspects of learning that will ensure an interesting navigation and exploration of and through the globalized world.
You will enjoy cross-cultural team-experiences (not only within your own class, but also with teams somewhere in the world with whom you hook up online), explore who you are and discover what impact your beliefs have on how you function and perceive others. You will follow classes on what is needed to create good and effective teams and teamwork, and how leadership influences the functioning of individuals and teams. You will participate in debates and be challenged on your thinking and beliefs through (team)exercises.
Furthermore, you will get an outlook and first-hand stories and experiences on several topics concerning globalization from personal, organizational, social, societal and economic viewpoints. Your mind will be challenged with information and subsequent debates!
All the lessons will lead to a project where you will do actual research work on a (global) topic, connect and network with companies and other institutions in order to prepare an article that is worthy of publishing. And maybe attracting companies on LinkedIn.
As teams, you also will receive lots of support through regular team coaching sessions.
