Future Proof Airport Seaport Logistics

In this minor you form an idea of the logistic networks surrounding airport and seaport. You gain insight into current technical and strategical developments in these networks and learn to appreciate how such developments impact structure and character of operations. These changes manifest at various scale levels of operations and in different ways (person, company, chain, network and society). Currently trending topics are: System innovations & Network Technologies, Energy Transition, Climate change impact and mitigation, Circularity driven business models, Robotization/ Automation and Infrastructural challenges in a dense setting.

The minor is characterised by a problem-driven approach: This 'challenge' is the central project that is being worked on for the semester. All challenges offered are linked to actual problems raised by stakeholders and AUAS research programs. Challenges evolve around interpreting, adapting and improving (international) Dutch main port logistics in a rapidly changing world. Whilst gaining expert topic knowledge in the broad world of main port logistics, the minor also aims to help you gain and/or improve professional competences necessary for the 21st century workplace and offers excellent preparation for both internships and graduation.

In the execution of the challenges teams organise their semester study plan and -path in close consultation with coaches and project-owner. In this aspect work in the minor resembles an internship of graduation project. With no scheduled exams or classes this minor offers a great deal of freedom for you to organise and execute work as you see fit. Clearly, since all work carried has its basis in the real business world this comes with considerable responsibility.

Leerdoelen

In the AUAS COP structure, the emphasis is on developing competencies and preparing you for successful graduation and entry into the labour market. The approach focuses on balancing demand and supply in guidance/coaching and your own autonomy/independence. You are supported in clarifying and concretising your learning questions. Competency-level learning outcomes allow you to determine, in consultation with coaches, how and when learning objectives are achieved.

For the FPASL minor, growth in the 21st-century skills is pursued as a learning outcome, these are:

Learning Skills

  • Critical Thinking - you will be able to think clearly and rationally, analyse problems, and make well-informed decisions. This includes evaluating information, assessing arguments, and distinguishing facts from opinions.
  • Creativity - you will be able to generate new and original ideas, think outside the box, and develop innovative solutions. Creativity drives innovation and adaptation to change by finding new approaches to problems and opportunities.
  • Collaboration - you will be able to work effectively with others, both within and outside one’s own organisation or team. This includes sharing ideas, resolving conflicts, and achieving common goals.
  • Communication - you will be able to convey ideas and information clearly and effectively through various media (oral, written, digital). This requires strong listening skills and the ability to tailor messages to different audiences.

Literacy Skills

  • Information Literacy - you will be able to find, evaluate, use, and manage information. This involves critically assessing the reliability and relevance of information sources and efficiently using information to solve problems.
  • Media Literacy - you will be able to critically understand, analyse, and evaluate media content. This includes recognising how media messages can influence audiences and the ability to create and communicate via various media platforms.
  • Technology Literacy - you will be able to understand, use, and apply digital technologies in different contexts. This includes both technical skills and the capacity to integrate technology into daily tasks and problem-solving.

Life Skills

  • Flexibility - you will be able to adapt to changing circumstances and environments. This includes being open to new ideas, handling uncertainty, and quickly adjusting plans or approaches when necessary.
  • Leadership - you will be able to inspire, motivate, and guide others towards a common goal. This involves taking responsibility, making decisions, and developing a vision that others are willing to follow.
  • Initiative - you will be able to act independently, identify opportunities, and take action without waiting for direction. This includes proactivity, self-starting ability, and taking calculated risks.
  • Productivity - you will be able to work efficiently and effectively to achieve goals. This involves time management, prioritisation, and maximising output with available resources.
  • Social Skills - you will be able to communicate effectively with others and build relationships in diverse contexts. This includes empathy, respect, collaboration, and the ability to work in diverse teams and resolve conflicts.

Course Description

  • The minor takes 20 weeks (one semester).
  • The minor represents 30 ECTS, accredited in one integral, summative score (Rubrics).
  • The outcome of the minor consists of three parts: the MSP (Minor Starting Plan), The MFO (Minor Final Outcome) and the PLR (Personal Learning Route).

Educational Format
The minor is characterised by a problem-driven approach: This 'challenge' is the central project that is being worked on for the semester in a team of 5 students. Challenges stem from either business clients (sponsors) or AUAS research programs and feature and realistic problems.

In addition to working on the challenge, an individual development trajectory happens.  You formulate concrete objectives for three, skill based, personal learning goals. The aim is to organically align these goals with the experiences gained during the minor.

This programme is based on self-study and -organisation, with close guidance and supervision by two team-dedicated coaches and the challenge-owner. In addition to weekly coaching sessions, a study manual, lectures, workshops and presentations are offered and access to experts is made available when needed.

Progress is monitored via continuous feedback cycles throughout the semester which are registered by students in feedpulse.

If there is an insufficient grade repair/resit is possible in the last 2 weeks of the semester. If this repair/resit is not sufficient the minor can be retaken in the following semester.
