Global Citizenship in Education & Social Work (Location Deventer)


This minor focusses on the challenge young professionals in Education and Social Work face when they have to work together in a globally connected and intercultural environment.

Brief outline

This minor wants to facilitate students from different study programs to work together in a multidisciplinary team. We will combine the knowledge, insights and skills from these different    (and international) backgrounds to create a dynamic and explorative environment to study Global Citizenship in the context of various practices, especially teaching and social work. We focus on the local communities and neighborhoods; because that is where the global meets the local.

This minor consist of 8 courses, divided in a general part (15 ECTS) and a practical part (15 ECTS)

1 Perspectives on Global Citizenship    

We will read and discuss scientific articles and theories about global (and European) citizenship.  Different perspectives on global citizenship and cosmopolitanism will lead to different approaches in the working field.

2 Identity in the 21 first century              

When we talk about globalization and the global village, identity is often discussed. What does national identity mean in a world that is characterized by growing interconnectedness, communication/ information technologies and social media?

3 Ethics in a world of diversity                

For various reasons cultural diversity entails an ethical challenge for every professional. How to deal with different opinions and customs, values and norms and what is the role of the universal human rights in everyday life and in our various fields of work?

4 Tackling radicalization                           

Violent extremism and the underlying forces of radicalization are among the most pervasive challenges of our globalized world. We will explore the role and function of schools, teachers, social workers and various organizations within neighborhoods and local communities regarding this issue. 

5 Intercultural communication

Students will be introduced to basic thoughts and practices  regarding intercultural communication. This knowledge will be linked to different contexts, especially education and social work. 

6 Action Research

Students who attend this minor have to reflect on their own professional abilities to solve problems in the realm of education and social work.

7 Global Citizenship in practice                              

               A Research in practice 

Students have to develop and implement a project within the realm of Global Citizenship and legitimate and evaluate it ethically and scientifically.

               B Excursion (Brussels)                                

Students will participate in an excursion to a city in Europe (e.g. Brussels) to learn about good practices - with regard to Global Citizenship

8 Portfolio                                                        

In the portfolio the student describes his or her professional development during the minor.

9 Professional profile                                  

               A Social Work  

Students will work in Homogeneous groups  of Social workers and Teachers with regard to the themes of the minor.

Course structure

This minor consist of a general part and a part that focuses on specific learning profile. The learning profiles that we distinguish are: Social Work and (Teacher) Education. In this minor we use a problem based approach. There are fixed content knowledge areas that we address.

In the general part students will work together in multidisciplinary teams. In consultation with their Teachers they will formulate their own research/ learning questions in relation to real live cases that students themselves will be address within the courses. In each course students are challenged to fill in their professional identity in regard to the theme of that specific course.

Each course consists of introductory lectures and tutorials. In addition student work together in smaller multidisciplinary groups on practical problems within the realm of their future profession. The first part of the minor consist of 6 courses which are distinguishable from each other, but are clearly related in terms of content. These courses include a time investment of 15 ECTS. The second part of the minor consist of an action-research (project) within in the realm of the professional practice. This second part of the minor consist also 15 ECTS.

Target group

This minor is open to all minor students, both national and international. Special interest for teachers, social workers and policy makers.

You must have satisfied the requirements for the first year of your degree programme.

This minor will assesses six competences

2 European and global professionalism

3 International/European multiculturalism

4 European language competence

5 Research competences

6 Reflective Professional

The assessment is based on the portfolio the student describes his or her professional development during the minor. These assessment consist of a personal part with a reflection on the development of the competences as described above. The second part of the portfolio consist  a description and an appreciation of the contribution of the student regarding the achievements of the (process an product) of the group.

There are two assessments planned during the minor period.
