Chemical Science & Engineering (Transfer minor / doorstroomminor)
This transfer minor is for all students who want to deepen their knowledge in the field of Chemical Science & Engineering and are interested in the scientific approach. The aim of this minor is to prepare you for the level of the master’s. This means that you become acquainted with scientific research skills, will work on your mathematics to bring your knowledge to a higher level and follow domain specific courses. With this minor you can start immediately after completing your BSc programme in the master’s programme Chemical Science & Engineering.
Within this transfer minor you have to choose one specialization: Molecular & Materials Engineering or Chemical & Process Engineering.
Onderwerpen die aan bod komen:
- Mathematics for both specializations: basic knowledge of functions with one or more variables, differentiations, integration, programming (Matlab)
- Domain specific, Molecular & Materials Engineering: catalysis & reaction kinetic, industrial chemistry & processes, advanced materials science, chemistry & technology of materials
- Domain specific, Chemical & Process Engineering: catalysis & reaction kinetic, chemical reaction engineering, fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer, numerical methods
The main learning objective of the programme is to lay a sound theoretical foundation under the practical knowledge that you already obtained during your bachelor’s programme. The transfer minor prepares you for the master's in Chemical Engineering and if you successfully complete it within a year, you will have direct access to the master’s after obtaining the HBO diploma.
Good to know that this minor aims to attract students from universities of applied sciences (HBO) who have the adequate motivation and capacities to complete an English-taught degree programme on university level.
The transfer minor is only accessible for students with an HBO bachelor’s in Chemistry or Chemical Technology. In some cases other programmes can be admitted, the programme can make an exception. An individual request for this must be submitted.
You need to have completed 120 ECs from the first two years of your current related bachelor’s studies before starting this transfer minor. Please send with your signed Learning agreement a grading list containing all your bachelor courses with the obtained marks. We will also look at your grades to make a estimation if you will successful finish the transfer minor.
In addition, the University of Twente assumes that students who start this transfer minor possess sufficient prior knowledge in mathematics (preferably Wiskunde B on so-called VWO-level) and that they are sufficiently proficient in English (benchmark score in this regard: IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80). Students are supposed to assess themselves whether their competencies in this respect match with the recommended levels.
Considering the programme of the minor you may realize that these requirements are related firmly to its contents: if you don’t meet the requirements, your chances of finishing the minor programme are low.
In order to determine whether your current studies is sufficiently related to Chemical Science & Engineering, please check: www.doorstroommatrix.nl and check the Chemical Science & Engineering programme’s website.
The books used for each course can be found in the course descriptions of the individual courses in the course catalogue.
- The programme can only be followed in full time study.
- Courses are spread over the five working days of the week, although occasionally a day may be “free”. Note that in this case students are assumed to spend their time in self-study.
- There is 1 term of enrolment: September
Below you find a list of the courses you will take:
- Calculus A
- Calculus B
- A course in Matlab
- Workshop Academic Skills
Molecular & Materials Engineering:
- Catalysis & reaction kinetic
- Industrial chemistry & processes
- Advanced materials science
- Chemistry & technology of materials
Chemical & Process Engineering:
- Catalysis & reaction kinetic
- Chemical reaction engineering
- Fluid dynamics
- Heat and mass transfer
- Numerical methods
Assessment of the study results with a grade will happen during each individual course. After each examination one re-examination is available in case of failure. The minor programme can only be finished successfully (implying admission to the master’s programme) if all individual courses have resulted in a sufficient mark. The minor programme should be finished successfully within a year after the start in order to get admission to the master’s programme.
The language of this transfer minor is English. The literature is almost all in English.
N.B. The learning agreement signed by the student and his Examination Board must have reached the UT-contactperson before the enrollment ends.
