In this module, students learn about natural science for studying global change and how to conduct both qualitative and quantitative research.

NOTE: following this module does not guarantee direct access to the master Sustainable Development.  

This module has one course taught in English and one taught in Dutch.

Programma
This module consists of two courses:

Period 2: Natural Processes - 7,5 EC (ENG)
Period 2: Onderzoeksvaardigheden NW&I - 7,5 EC (NL)

After completion of the Natural Processes course, the student is able to:

• describe the major energy and chemical stocks in the earth systems' compartments, as well as the flows between them;
• understand the major processes that govern the transport of energy and elements  within and between the different environmental compartments (atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere);
• understand how anthropogenic disturbances of the main flows and stocks of energy and elements are linked to global change phenomena.

Na afronding van de cursus Onderzoeksvaardigheden NW&I, kan de student:

• De grondslagen en karakteristieken van kwalitatieve en kwantitatieve onderzoeksmethoden beschrijven;
• Deze onderzoeksmethoden op een elementair niveau toepassen in een zelfstandig onderzoek, met nadruk op kwalitatief onderzoek;
• De onderzoeksresultaten op een zinvolle manier interpreteren;
• In woord en geschrift op een wetenschappelijk verantwoorde manier rapporteren over het onderzoek.

Meer in het bijzonder kunnen de studenten: 

• verschillende onderzoekstypen en ontwerpen van elkaar onderscheiden en van een kritische kanttekening voorzien;
• op een heldere wijze een opzet voor een empirische onderzoek schrijven;
• verschillende strategieën voor dataverzameling en -analyse toepassen, met focus op kwalitatieve onderzoeksmethodes;
• op adequate wijze verslag leggen van empirisch onderzoek, op zo’n manier dat middels een logisch gestructureerde en solide betooglijn een afdoende en overtuigend antwoord wordt gegeven op een onderzoeksvraag.  

• Having passed at least 120 EC from your Bachelor programme including the propaedeutic year
• Interest in societal challenges, such as sustainability
• Background in natural sciences at havo/vwo level

It is important to know that when you register for a course, you are automatically registered for the first test options of that course.

There is a maximum of 5 places for this module. If there are more interested students, students will be placed in the order of application in OSIRIS.
